Trends in polls over a period of time are the key to understanding where a race is headed, and today there are many smiles for some and apprehension for others.  USA Today/Gallup has some results that show a national mood that will unsettle the GOP.

In Maryland, Democratic Senate candidate Ben Cardin leads his Republican opponent Michael Steele 48%-36% among registered voters.  But look at what happens if you ask likely voters who they prefer, and the result is 54%-39% in Cardin’s favor.

In Missouri Clair McCaskill (D) was leading incumbent Senator Talent (R) among likely voters 48%-45%.  Likewise Democrats for United States Senate races in Tennessee, Virginia, and even New Jersey show polling upswings placing them all in the lead.
