California Wildfires As Seen From NASA Satellite, Google Maps, CNN
2007 October 23
UPDATED
The continuing expansion and horror of the California wildfires can be seen with NASA satellite technology. 300,000 people have been forced from their homes as of this morning and live video from CNN online shows the reasons why.
Google Maps has an amazing map of the wildfires and continually updated information. Thanks to Dan, a reader here, another great map has been added from Google showing the scope of the fire.
As the story continues live video feed from 10News can be seen online from California TV.

Malkin and several others blame the environmentalists who refused (and still refuse even as the fires burn) to let the government clear up the branches littering the forest and thin some of the trees away, resulting in thick and dry woods that burn frightfully.

It adds up with Crichton’s speech about environmentalist meddling which resulted in the similar burning of Yellowstone Park.

I composited a map of the fires with smoke — details on how to do it (through Google Earth) are in the descriptions –

The San Diego paper has had pretty good coverage of the fire thus far.

Two of my friends live in the area – one flew out of the state to be with relatives – so far her home is untouched. My other friend is still a few miles away. Just so scary!
It is unbelievable. I lived in CA for over 35 years, and moved away two years ago. During that time, I have never seen anything like this tragic and devastating situation.
My thoughts to all affected.
Wow. Great links. I HAVE to link to you on my own blog to show everyone how large these wildfires are. Even I didn’t understand the magnitude of these fires until now.
This is a better map, IMO.
