New Radio Station Devoted To Eliot Spitzer Saga Would Make Fibber McGee Roar

We found ourselves driving recently and laughing heartily to the old radio classic “Fibber McGee And Molly’ on Sirius Radio.  The show is one of the longer running classic comedies on radio, lasting from 1935 until the late 1950’s.  The jokes were scripted in such a way that often we could see where the punch lines would land, and yet the comedy was fresh in the sense that it was professionally delivered and free of the cruder side of too much of today’s comedy.  Perhaps the best lines were from the famous and persistent small child “Teeny”, who delighted in making a sale of cookies for a school project to the reluctant McGee.  As we drove along I was reminded that this was a carefree way to listen to radio.  No election drama, no terrorist news, no calamity of any sorts.  It was just plain fun!

(Which is one reason I am leaning to keeping Sirius Radio…though I very much love traditional radio.)

So I was kind of perplexed when CNN reported Sirius Radio created a new channel just for the lurid interest in New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, and his tawdry actions that resulted in his resignation as Governor.

For those who can’t get enough of the sex scandal that brought down New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Sirius Satellite Radio has launched what it is calling “Client 9 Radio,” a special channel dedicated to covering all aspects of the Spitzer saga.

The new station began broadcasting Friday at 5 p.m. ET, the company announced. Programming will continue only until midnight on March 17, a statement from Sirius said.

I really do enjoy the latest news, and even the most base of stories about the mighty and powerful that make the headlines.  But a NEW station designed merely to titillate over a story such as this?

I can only image the reaction from Fibber McGee!
