Barack Obama Delivers Powerful Speech About Race In America And Rev. Wright
Some speeches by politicians are mere political words of convenience. Then there are times when a politician rises above the moment and reaches for history. It was the stretch for the larger truth and the greater hope that Barack Obama took to the airwaves across the nation to address the issues of race in America, and the comments made by his pastor, Rev. Wright.
As CNN reported Obama took the issues that confront his country and campaign head on today.
Obama said that his belief that all people want to move in the same direction comes from his “unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. But it also comes from my own American story.”
Obama emphasized his upbringing — “the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas.”
“I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible,”he said.
The full speech can be found here…..and I urge readers who did not see the speech to at least read the words. They are insightful.
And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions – the good and the bad – of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.
I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.
Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork. We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias.
But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.
###
But for all those who scratched and clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn’t make it – those who were ultimately defeated, in one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations – those young men and increasingly young women who we see standing on street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for the future. Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Reverend Wright’s generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table. At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician’s own failings.
And occasionally it finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright’s sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from solving real problems; it keeps us from squarely facing our own complicity in our condition, and prevents the African-American community from forging the alliances it needs to bring about real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races.
In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race. Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one’s handed them anything, they’ve built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pension dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and feel their dreams slipping away; in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense. So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear that an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they’re told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time. Like the anger within the black community, these resentments aren’t always expressed in polite company. But they have helped shape the political landscape for at least a generation. Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan Coalition. Politicians routinely exploited fears of crime for their own electoral ends. Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism. Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices, and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding.
This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.

SENATOR OBAMA, PLEASE TELL AMERICA YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS AMERICAN JUDICIAL INJUSTICE ???
LETS ALL HOPE OUR MEDIA FRIENDS ALSO SHOW AN INTEREST IN REPORTING ON THIS AMERICAN HORROR FACING THESE (TENS OF THOUSANDS) FORGOTTEN AND TRAPPED POORER AMERICANS, AND HOW THIS POSSIBLE FUTURE PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER HANDLES THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE FACING AMERICA’S LATINO AND BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITIES ????

THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE $LOWLY FINDING OUT HOW EA$Y IT I$ FOR MIDDLE CLA$$ AND WORKING POOR AMERICAN$ TO FALL VICTIM TO OUR U$ MONETARY JUDICIAL $Y$TEM.
****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.
This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.
This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!
Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!
For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.
It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.
This FACADE and HORROR of our Federal Appeal proce$$ is not worthy of the Greatest Country In The World!

The disparate takes on Obama’s speech are a perfect example of why I left my Political Science program. It’s hard enough to get people to agree on simple things, like why the sky is blue or whether the world is round or flat, but asking people to discuss nuanced complex issues like race, economics and the environment is a virtual impossiblity. Throughout the history of this country (and the world), people have loved their beliefs and biases more than their fellow man, and that dangerous nature has nearly destroyed this country (and the world!) on more than one occasion. Being right is more important than the truth, and the Crossfireization of 21st century politics has reinforced that kind of parsing and backtracking to a level that I can barely tolerate.
That being said, unless you’re one of the Big Jims of the world (see his comment above for a perfect example of paragraph 1), I find it hard to believe that you couldn’t listen to Tuesday’s speech and come away with the realization that it wasn’t just a great campaign speech but one of the greatest oratories by an American politician in our country’s history. When was the last time a politician, especially one running for President, spoke out about issues of race and its connection to economic and social problems with such frank and open-minded viewpoints? This is a person who speaks to the intelligence of his audience, not down to the lowest common denominator or with a didactic air of someone lecturing 5 year olds. Some commentators have attacked Obama for speaking too intellectually here; for me, I’m overjoyed that a candidate has finally decided to raise the level of debate in this country and asked his audience to respect the complexity of the issues facing our society in the next century. I’ll take that over the same old platitudes every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
PS For an example of the other type of politician, see Hilary’s attacks on Obama for the primary debacles in Michigan and Florida; she agreed to set aside the delegates there like all the other candidates did but now that she needs those delegates, she’s changing her tune. Same old crap, different year.
How can anybody be disgusted in what Obama said in his speech, Kate? That just implies that you despise truth, authenticity and reality. He’s not racist and he’s not anti-American based on his demeanor, kin, and speech. So now his unrelenting critics decide lets now impugn his judgment. I am tired of the spin and the propaganda from the right talk show host who has unlimited air time to vent their bias views- a Pure attempt to manipulate those who don’t think for themselves. Hillary destructive refusal of her defeat is killing the party she will do anything to win like say both herself and Obama are better than a republican in office during the televised debates and after say “Mccain and herself is fit to be commander and chief but Obama just has a speech”. Obama can disagree with you with out vilifying you and making you an enemy. That’s one of the many things that I respect about the man. – Enough with dirty politics. – Enough with silly season. – Enough with the blatant distractions. Enough!!!!!!
ladod for a 64 year old you really need to stop playing the victim. Maybe get some comprehensive skills. I spun nothing, he made a good campaign speech, it was all the right words to the audience he needs to reach, what I pointed out were the facts about the party he belongs to. You don’t like it, I am not surprised, after all you are a “victim” according to democrats and you apparently have the need to play that role.
I am thoroughly disgusted by Obama. He should have completely denounced his pastor, categorically. Obviously, Obama believes what his pastor says and is completely indoctrinated into this church and this pastor. They’re racists and bigots. Obama has proven to be a man who’s love for this country is highly questionable. I do not trust him at this point and I will not vote for him. I believe he has devious plans for this country. Nothing good can come from him being elected. His blatant prejudice will surely arise and we will have an impeachment or blood running in the streets by all races. Obama speaks with a forked tongue. How did this fake even get elected to a Senate position much less come to be a presidential nominee of the free world?
At age 64 as a black man I have seen many things. Obama was right on target and has my vote as he does many here in California. Notalib sounds like he would howl if Obama had not made a speech. And then spins that Obama did make one. Is Notalib dumb and not knowing the demand by all for a speech. Sounds like he is just in high school and not wise about what so many of us have lived here. He will wise up as he grows and learns more.
Obama speaks of unity, sadly he is involved with the party that thrives on racism and division of the cultures. Todays speech did what so many Americans feared he has now turn this presidential election into an issue of race. Its sad in this day and age that the democrats continue living in the past, refuse to look past the color of ones skin and continue to use hateful rhetoric and allegations to keep America divided.
I thought Obamas speech today was just words.
Please, just vote for McCain!! Quit assassinating Obama’s character, why is he being held accountable for something someone else said in the first place?!?! I go to church, and definitely don’t agree with everything my pastor says, but will I simply stop attending my church? NO, of course NOT!!! I can think for myself. It appears those having the biggest issue with this are those who are incapable of thinking for themselves, and are easily influenced by others and think everyone is as easily influenced as they are!!! Give me a break!! How many Catholics are in the Senate, House or any other political branch… Did they dump their Catholic faith with all of the child molestation charges brought forth and the Catholic Church went through great lengths to cover it up for YEARS, better yet did they become child molesters themselves!!! Give me a Break!!! The way many of you think, you deserve another 4 years of Bush!!! So vote for McCain!!!
hey john, if you watched Obama speech you would have known that he learned to look above and beyond race and look at the good in people insted of pointing fingers and looking at the color of people’s skin, someting we all need to work on in this country.
I thought that the speech that Sen Obama gave today was the most inspirational speech that i have ever heard a canidate running for president give and i believe it will make it in the record books. I have been an Obama supporter for a long time but when problems come up like this i try and take a step back and look at the situation from different points of view. I admit i was shocked at the Rev comments. I never stopped supporting Obama but the comments made by his Rev extreme. Obama’s speech brought to attention the need together and solve these problems instead of pointing fingers. This is why I have supported him and always will. I have never looked up to a politic before are even agreed with most of them until now. He reasured me today. If people say that Obama is all words and no action that why are those same people making such a deal out of what his Rev said? thanks matt
This speech was given by a true leader and will go down in the history books as one of this countries great speeches. I am a white 48-year-old woman, and I believe this man will be one of this countries great leaders. He has what this country needs at this moment in history. In short, he gets it. He seeps of common since, good judgment and courage. Let us hope the American public gets it. Those people who believe the lies of his opponents have not listened and researched this man and who he is. Unfortunately, fear still blinds them. I will be proud to place my vote for this man and I was a Hillary supporter. It is as he says, those who have power will not let go of it easily and will spread fear to protect that power. It is up to us to step up, speak out, drown out the pundits, and prove them wrong. The youth of this nation could teach us older generation a lot and maybe we should start listening to them. What kind of country are we going to leave them?
Obama has spent his life denying his white heritage and obsessing about his blackness. I’ve read his book, “Dreams of My Father” and his wife’s thesis, “Princeton Blacks and the Black Community” and I don’t think it is possible for two people so distrustful of the white race to represent our country. To say that Obama did not know everything his mentor and good friend Rev. Wright is to say that Obama is stupid. Obama is anything but stupid – self-absorbed, a liar, distrustful.. – but not stupid. However, if America elects him as their president – now that would be stupid.
Obama was eloquent today in the way he addressed institutional racism. I am a white woman in my early 50’s. I am appalled at what we have done to African Americans in our history and can completely understand that there may be anger there. Barack has done an incredible job of explaining what happened and the fact that blacks have always been held back. I work in child welfare and research shows that while black families don’t abuse or neglect their kids more than any other group, their kids are in foster care at a much larger percent and once in foster care they receive less services and stay in care longer than their white counterparts. This is the FACTS. I hate to say it but its true. I appreciate that Barack is able to bring this topic up and that we can, as a nation unite and become one. Barack is the only person I know who can make this happen. Our country needs this. He is a Christian and he wants to do good. Let him! I support him more now than ever.
ALL I WANT TO DO WHEN I SEE OR HEAR OBAMA IS TAKE A SHOWER. THIS IS ONE SHARP THUG, PREYING ON AMERICANS WITH HIS SHARP TONGUE. HE IS HANGING OUT WITH A RACIST FOR 20 YEARS AND ONCE TO GIVE A SERMON OR RACE.
Thank you John for acknowledging your feelings and the fact that you are also a male African-American. Frankly, it seems that I have had the impression that the majority of black people are voting for Barack and that nonone particularly cared about his character. This tells me that you do. I believe that we will one day soon have an African American for president and it will be a good thing. I hope that it does bring us together. Not any black man will do, just as not any white man will do. Both need to be honest and straightforward.
Ferrell,
I am not sure what you read or watch but let me tell you in all fairness the last four or five days the news media (print and TV) have been saturated with this story. I honestly do not know how this story could have slipped under anyones radar.
Do a Google news search if you do not trust my words.
Why is it that the McCain story with a lobbyist gets front page, tabloid type coverage in the New York Times, MSNBC, NBC, CNN and Senator Obama’s association with a America hating Pastor gets buried or not mentioned at all in either newspapers or broadcast and cable?? If McCain had driven by a KKK rally 50 years ago it would be front page, scandal laiden news. Senator Obama meanwhile gets the Teflon treatment.
from John – “But Wright’s words were more than just anger, they were both racist and anti-American, and they and he should be rejected by Obama.”
Umm, he has spent a considerable amount of time rejecting these words. And in the spirit of the Christian faith, which he professes, he refuses to reject the man. Just as I, as a Christian, have rejected the hate-mongering speech of the Falwell’s of the world, but cannot reject them seeing that they are fellow partakers in the faith. I found his analogy to his grandmother to be on point. If his grandmother were alive today and someone caught her spewing racist language, would you then ask him to reject his grandmother or to stop finding comfort in her? For some of us, our pastors are like older family members in which we agree with some of the things they say and we disagree with others. I believe Obama’s rejection of his Wright’s racist statements are heartfelt. I mean, how could Obama feel hatred towards half of his identity (white mother) and if Obama should resent any group, it should be that of his black father which abandoned him when he was young. But yet in the path of reconciliation, he made peace with that side of his family which rejected him.
Many are tired of trying to convince McCain supporters and some Clinton supporters that Obama rejects such comments from the Reverend. Let me add that I respect Mrs. Clinton’s effort to NOT fuel the flames of this episode. However, I am sure that Obama’s heartfelt plea and Clinton’s sound judgment in not addressing the issue, will go ignored by the media and the race-tinged American public.
I think it is interesting that Obama is saying that he did have knowledge his mentor’s attitude towards this Country. I had submitted a note yesterday about what I thought Obama’s approach would be and I think I was right. I also think that Obama is putting a race card as a spin to this. Here is where he is like Bush, Obama is telling the Country that inspite of what you’ve seen and heard you will deal with it because I will become President and I will continue associating myself with this church even tho the current pastor and congregation share the same sentiments as the retired one. Obama is not going to allow this Country to dictate to him what he is going to or not going to do. I will listen to his speach again and comment later but If this Country caves in this outragious behavior and justification of it hold tight because if Obama is president, there is more to come.
I listened to the message delivered by Barack Obama this morning, hoping he would say more. Instead, he offered to excuse and explain away the comments by Reverend Wright through the use of the history of America and by exploiting the plight of African Americans to justify Wrights Characterizations. As an African American male, I think there is no justification for Wright’s comments. I grew up in a black Church in Atlanta, and I have never in my life heard such rhetoric in the pulpit.
Obama speaks abut Wright’s words in these terms:
“But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren’t simply controversial. They weren’t simply a religious leader’s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country – a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam. “
But Wright’s words were more than just anger, they were both racist and anti-American, and they and he should be rejected by Obama. It one thing to talk about issues facing African Americans, but his comments were not limited to that. He talked about rich White people and condemned them. He condemned America and asked God to Damn America. He also insinuated that the US created AIDS to kill people.
These comments do speak to the African American experience in any way, and I do not see how Barack Obama can justify or explain these comments in any way by trying to use the plight of African-Americans. I have not heard comment about America like that from the Hispanic community who is in many ways in a parallel to the Black community on many fronts. Also, I have never heard such language from Native Americans, who have more rights to make such statements that anyone.
Further Obama described the church he knows when he said, “People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend’s voice up into the rafters…” However, that is the same thing the congregation did as Wright made his comments. So were they condoning the comments?
The most disappointing moments in the speech was when he answered the questions that have been engrained in everyone’s mind, did he know about these types of comments during his time in the church.
“I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely – just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed. “
He simply answered yes. I was so hurt by the fact that he admitted that he had known about these types of comments, but also said he would continue to surround himself by reverend Wright. This means that he lied to America when he said he had never heard any of these comments, and that he saw them for the first time on TV with us. I believed he had the judgment to lead America, but he has clearly failed in that judgment.
While there were many truths about racism tied into the speech, they do not excuse Wright’s comments, place them in an acceptable context, and do not excuse Barack’s judgment and decision to surround himself, and continue to surround himself, with Wright. Obama has proven to be a masterful orator, and disguises the truth within powerful oratory, but that does not hide the truth. It only disguises the truth.
Why is Wright on Obama’s campaign committee if he is just his pastor???
I am so proud of Obama despite the scrutiny he is receiving from his opponent and the media. His speech appealed to the blacks who may have felt betrayed as well as the whites who may not understand the black church experience. He was placed in a tough position of defending his race as well as his religion while trying to appeal to all people of the US. He unlike the other candidates has a diverse background in which he can relate to both blacks and whites. I’m so glad he didn’t condemn Rev. Wright as a person. Instead he chose to explain the reverend’s view point/opinion. It ultimately wasn’t his job to try to justify Wright’s comments. Let Wright do that. He should not be judged based on someone else’s view regardless of who they are, he should be judged on the content of his character. Now who’s getting beat up by the media? He is for unity of all people not just A. Americans. For that reason I feel he is the best candidate for president.
The speech was long over do, someone needs to finally tell America and the world what Rev. Wrights comments were all about…America’s past as it relates to race has always been seen from two prospectives, the black/white…The injustices faced by my people in America will always be branded in my heart, soul and life..as the Jewish community feels about their history…We can understand their plight, so understand ours, as Black/African Americans. We do love our country, but we have deep wounds as a people as it pertains to America’s history in dealing with race relations..Some whites, not all, will never understand how we feel, unless they could change their race for a day and walk in our shoes…Racism will always exist in America, because of America’s past..All who will not vote for Obama, because of his pastors’ sermon, wouldn’t have voted for Obama anyway. They can use this as an excuse but the real truth is they didn’t like what her said. Obama can identify with both sides of the race issue and would make him the only person who is qualified to run and lead this country to the America we all dream and long for…..
First and foremost, just like the two-faced overseer who was often Black, a Black person leaked the Rev. Wright video. No Caucasian had access to it. They were never at the church. Why do this now when Obama is so close? The reason is age-old. Jealousy. It reared its ugly head and took a hugh chunk out of Obama’s campaign. There is a secret problem that is prevalent in the black communities. Maybe not so secret. Some Black people don’t want to see other black people get ahead. Especially is the black person has skin that is lighter than theirs. Sad but true. Just as there are Caucasian people who will not vote for Obama just because of his complexion, there are Black people who will not vote for him just because of his complexion.
For what it is worth, the Rev. does not speak for the beliefs of Sen. Obama. I do not see anyone saying Sen. Clinton needs to divorce President Clinton for his remarks… Is he not more a part of her life then is the Rev. a part of Sen. Obama’s??? How do we slight the card deck on Sen. Obama, when he may or may not have even heard any of these remarks. Why are so many stations focused on this incident instead of the real issues? The media is keeping Sen. Obama on the defense now to keep themselves looking good to Sen. Clinton after her out lash at them. I regret they can be used a pawns in her game. They have still not asked her the question of what her experience is. So I am asking for them. What is it??? When will she release the documents she has promised so many time to release? If you are going to dig, then dig everywhere. Have we so quickly forgotten that our government trained and empowered Osama Bin Laden? Rev. Right was probably serving during this time. Would this not make it right that it was “America’s Chickens coming home to roost?” Yes, dig everywhere and tell the truth. Not just what we feel will bring conflict and ratings, but what would educate people in a time when education about this part of America’s past is conveniently forgotten. It is so one sided to focus just on what tabloids would write about, they are never concerned about the issues. It is beginning to look like this is what most of the news channels are turning into “TV Garbage Magazines”. No wonder the American People can’t make up their minds. News channels are supposed to provide news, not gossip and garbage, but news. Can we please stop worrying about ratings all the time and really give the American public what it deserves? How about trying the truth and the questions that really need to be answered?
I am a 60 year old white female, middle class. I voted for Hillary in the Primary; but, if I voted today, right now, I would definitely vote for Obama. He addressed the issues clearly, I got to see who Obama is as he spoke from the heart. It was genuine and real. He answered my questions. Pastor Wright is wrong in these snippets, but Obama let us see the whole picture. The black churches are different from whites. Their culture, their history is different from us as whites. But, let us look at the accomplishments of this church in this community. It has helped people get off welfare, helped single parents, on and on. I want us to ask what are these rich white preachers like Hagee and Parsley that are supporting McCain doing. They are padding their pocketbooks, you do not see them making these types of changes in the communities where their churches are located. These rich millionaire preachers, both black and white are Repulican because they want these tax breaks. They are not considering the poor and middle class who made them rich. The right wing, the reporters like O’Reilly and Hannally and Colmes are so biased. They are placing emphasis on these snippets from Pastor Wright because they see that the Democratics, both Hillary and Obama are gaining ground and running off and leaving McCain. They are worried so they are developing a story to get people’s minds off the issues. AWESOME AND EXCELLENT SPEECH!!! This speech reminded me of President Kennedy’s speech, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Obama is forcing us to look at ourselves, our own prejudice and placing accountability and responsibility on us, white and black. We need unity in our country, united we stand, divided we fall. This speech makes me want to step up to the plate and do whatever I can to help bring about this unity, to get involved in politics. Now is the time America for us to make a difference. It may never come again. We desperately need change. Here is a man who not only addresses the problems, but gives solutions. And in closing, I say a speech his wife gave a few days ago and she also speaks from the heart and is an excellent speaker. These two have been giving and giving and giving to our country already. They do have a history of service.
Search for the larger truth?? How about any truth at all. Let’s not forget that Obama lied. The only reason he is giving this speech in the first place is because people were not only outraged by his pastor’s comments but by Obama’s out and out denial of any knowledge in regards to same. The mark of leadership is the kind of person who will stand up in church when they hear their pastor make anti-American remarks and say “I will not stand for this”. A leader does not stand by idly. In this regard Obama has certainly showed he is a failure at leadership. A failure to lead his congregation in the right direction. No wonder he lied. He didn’t want to admit that he did not do the right thing. No speech, no matter how eloquent, should excuse Mr. Obama’s lack of honesty.
