Christmas In July……Errr….I Meant June!

While at the Hobby Lobby in Madison, the best place to have fantastic framing done at a reasonable price, I looked once…twice…..and then again. Surely I did not see Christmas wreaths and decorations up for sale.  I must have been experiencing the after-effects of being dehydrated from doing lawn work today.  Or perhaps my sight was failing after having been drained a quart of blood by the same mosquitoes that were carrying kids off the beach.  Whatever might be the cause I could not possibly be seeing Christmas in July!

Realizing I was not seeing a mirage I wandered over to a sweet older lady working there who looked nonplussed over my astonishment at seeing the decorations.  She informed me that the decorations and such had been for sale between 2-4 weeks already!   Silly me for missing the start of the Holiday tree trimming sales!  In fact she informed me that the fake trees were loaded up in the back of the store and would be up in just weeks.

Now I love the Hobby Lobby.  In fact just to be fair to them I will add they are having a 50% off custom frame sale this weekend that should smooth over any hard feelings they may have over this post….but really…..this is July!  And they are a Christian store that will not open on Sundays, and they clearly have a solid and dependable work force that makes shopping there a real joy.   But for them to have those beliefs and then make such crass decisions about making every dollar possible from the birth of the Lord is just unbecoming.

I think I speak for 99% of the people I know.  Let Christmas be a season that is special, and not merely used as a way to make money for the merchants. This is yet another reason that our home rejects the current way the holiday is celebrated, and why we work to have a more traditional and old-fashioned holiday in December.  I find this money making over a religious holiday getting worse every year.

Do you agree?

The week before the start of Summer,we, here in Maine, are having year end summer clothing sales featuring, of course, bathing suit discounts. Now let me tell you, Maine, being a Northern state, hasn’t even barely got the swimming pools going and we still can do hypothermia at the oceans [67 deg. according to weather bureau]. I expect thermal undies to go on sale soon. You know stock up now! Sand Beach at Acadia National Park has loads of sun bathers getting skin cancer but not too many blue people in the water.
