NBC Apologizes For Not Reporting Biography On Gay Olympic Gold-Medal Winner Matthew Mitcham

As posted here this week, NBC decided not to report on the background and life story of gold-medal winner Matthew Mitcham during the summer Olympics.  Given the compelling story that Mitcham has lived it seemed this was a made for TV moment.  Once the story of NBC’s actions made news both in print and blogs there was a decision by the network to at least make a statement about the matter, and apologize.

NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel has apologized to Australian gold-medal winner Matthew Mitcham for not profiling the openly gay diver during the network’s coverage or showing his partner in the stands at the time of his victory. “We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham’s story. We apologize for this unintentional omission,” Zenkel said.
