Dick Armey: “Bubba Vote” And Racism will Hurt Barack Obama
Since I find politics so interesting I read a great amount every day to stay on top of the latest news. But there are still stories I miss, as the one that came to my attention this morning on NBC’s “Meet The Press”. It was there I learned that Dick Armey made a statement earlier this month about the ‘bubba’ vote. Lets face it there are many white working class bigots, known as ‘bubba’, and they are going to play a role in this election. Sadly, I think the former Republican Congressman from Texas is correct as I have worried about the role that racism will play in this election, and what this national character flaw says about America in 2008. But after reading the full article online, I find again that Armey and the Republicans can’t pretend not to play a role in fomenting racist attitudes.
The “Bubba vote” and underlying racism will hurt Democrat Barack Obama in key battleground states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania, former House majority leader Dick Armey said Wednesday.
“The Bubba vote is there, and it’s very real, and it is everywhere,” Armey told USA TODAY and Gannett News Service. “There’s an awful lot of people in America, bless their heart, who simply are not emotionally prepared to vote for a black man.
Armey said Obama’s “funny name” — a phrase the Illinois senator uses himself — could “give people concerns that he could be or has been too much influenced by Muslims, which is a great threat now.” Obama is Christian.
What!!!!!
Dick Armey feeds into the line of horse rot that the name of the Democratic candidate can be considered as a reason a religious faith might control the actions of a person if elected!! This is the type of having it both ways on the Republican side that fails to meet the smell test. Sure the GOP wants to pretend they are not interested in racist votes for John McCain, but then while trying to make that point adds the Muslim slur.
Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, objected to Armey’s reference to Muslim influence as a “threat.”
“If he really believes that Muslims are a threat, then he must be out of step with American values of inclusion, respect and plurality,” Awad said.

It took a bit but we have found out that we are not different or opposed to each other. This illustrates another big crack in the system. It manipulates and turns Americans against each other. And we really need each other. That is why the Creator placed All of US together on His Earth.
Well said. I agree. I don’t know about a complete overhaul, but it needs an enema or something. If they are talking about limiting CEO’s pension and benefits that are involved in these bailout scandals, then the next natural progression is to take back all of the cushy benefits our senators and congressmen receive. Most of which they voted in for themselves.
I have no need for 100 million dollars or seven homes. That is greed. Our political system “sucks”. Completely overhaul the whole system and maybe you will get better people to serve. Some good people involve themselves for good reasons but the system causes them to become corrupt to get elected and then prostitute themselves in order to effect their agendas. Others are straight up pawns for greed. Are these the flaws you speak of?
Globalization is the problem. We are more concerned about greedy interests all over the world, rather than solving all of our domestic issues. Who does have all of the experience or intelligence to get the job done? We do not need politicians with either. We need good men and good women with common sense.
This is getting tedious. I suppose I don’t need seven homes. McCain has seven homes because his wife is extremely rich, which in turn makes him extremely rich. She is an heiress of one of largest beer distributors in the US. Question to you? If your family had $100 million dollars would you only own one home? This is a yes or no question. Very easy to answer.
But this is also a non-issue. McCrash and Obama are flawed canidates. So were GW, Kerry, and Gore. Lincoln was a one-term senator that most people knew very little about but he was a great president. That ship has sailed. With globalization everything is much more complex and our canidates lack the exprience and the intelligence to get the job done.
The reason I was jumping on Democrats is because everyone in this blog only seems to blame Republicans. I thought I explained this. I’m not trying to defend Cheney or anyone. Yes I did vote for Bush. I also voted for Bubba. I’m not happy about it. I wasn’t trying to be boastfull in my previous post when I said I was on the winning side of the election. If it came across that way it was unintentional.
I beleive that most Dem’s and Republicans are the same. They have selective listening when it comes to scandal and stupidity. Can’t we just agree that our policiticians suck. You vote for what is importanat to you and I’ll do the same. Whoever wins I will try to support them. I’ll hope they can get things fixed and I’ll try not to look for any excuse to trash them just because I didn’t vote for them.

Fools… You picked a winner last time in G. W. and the cronies, did you not? And now we are losing on the economy and in a war we cannot win. You say you are not a right-winger, but you are defending them. They have been in CHARGE the last eight years. Just as you have bashed only Democrats for the problems of Detroit and Nola, the publicans should have all accountabilty for that huge mess we are in now. Obama was not in CHARGE. The same hypocrisies and inaccuracies hold true .
As for cronies with ties, no one is tied closer than Dick Cheney to Haliburton. At the beginning of this administration “good old electrcute our own soldiers” Haliburton got a contract to handle all of the military logistics for 20 years. It is no wonder that 5 years after Bush stood on the aircraft carrier declaring mission accomplished, that we are still losing our young men and billions of dollars a month. Do you really think that they who are in CHARGE want to CHANGE ? They have 15 more years on that contract.
How many Americans have lost their only homes while KEEP the War going McPALIN has seven homes and no mortgages? That is the greedy mentality that allowed Wall Street to run rampant. Who needs seven homes, do you?
Kulese,
I don’t consider myself a right winger. I’ve voted for pres. four times and for what it’s worth I’ve picked a winner everytime. I think my streak is going to end this time. What I can’t stand is people that just blame Republicans. If you think it’s just George W and his buddies then you are out of touch with reality. It’s people with this attitude that the politicians love. Because they aren’t held accountable. They can always blame the other guy for their imcompetance. It makes me laugh watching people sniveling and crying at the democratic convention or worshiping McCrash like he is Uncle Sam reincarnate. Get a life you fools. And you do realize that Sen Obama and many prominant dem’s have close ties to the mortgage companies. Now we have this huge mess. Or do you look the other way and focus on just GW and his cronies. Many are quick to point to ties to Republicans and the oil industry. It’s hypocritical and inaccurate.
To marion…is racism an issue in Maine now? Wow there are only fourteen Black persons in the whole state. No wonder the racists there have to take it out on Obama in the presidential campaign.
That would be much better than a “REPEAT Stupid” president with “a stuff all the cash in your pockets invisible” vice president. Are you bubba? Seems like Bush is ‘affirmative action’ now on behalf of bankers while the sinking mid class goes under. Is a bailout the same as a surge? Both were put into force after allowing bad or no decisions to cause great losses.
Just think, we could have our first “Affirmative Action” president……………
tphillip37 if you are paying attention the Wall Street, USA is falling to pieces not just Motown and Nola. and the publicans have been in charge the past eight years. bubbas and bubbettes are everywhere, even in Alaska and the just outside of Richmond. They are all not racist, some are just equally stupid . Since some may never change and both candidates are advocating such, do you think they will stay at home and not vote? Are you a right – winger? Redneck bubbas are the biggest suckers especially when they think they are better off.
“One parishioner ruled out voting for Mr. Obama explicitly because he is black. “Are they going to make it the Black House?” Ray McCormick asked, to embarrassed hushing from a half dozen others gathered around the rectory kitchen.”
While reading MSNBC’s political news, I came across an article titled “Abortion dividing Catholic votes”. The above quote contained in that article is what worries me. I fully support people looking at the issues facing our nation including war, abortion, healthcare and taxes in making a voting decision for either party. But this…
So much hate. So much for issues…
The Bubba vote is there, and it’s very real, and it is everywhere,” Armey told USA TODAY and Gannett News Service. “There’s an awful lot of people in America, bless their heart, who simply are not emotionally prepared to vote for a black man.
You have no idea how true this is even in Maine where racism is becoming an issue. Robert was speaking with the plumber on his crew who was sure that the right thing to do was to vote for McCain. Robert asked why, and he said well we sure don’t want a “N—–” as President. Robert dropped the conversation right there..no use continuing. One cannot reason with a man with colored blinders on. Redneck intelligence is alive and well in the Northern states. It’s way too bad when all someone sees is color and not the brains behind the man.
I wish I was like the all knowing kulese and could have people figured out by reading one post. I guess because I bashed on Dick Armey and some people who vote Democratic I must be a right winger? A bit of a cop out but it makes things easier to understand. Is is possible there are huge blocks of people from different backgrounds that will only ever vote one way and never change. And they do this for different but equally stupid reasons. Democrats and Republicans do it. That is why we keep getting the terrible canidates who pander for our votes. You sound like a sucker kulese. But I could be wrong.
I do live around some people that I guess could be considered rednecks. They have a really southern drawl. Does that mean they are racist? I don’t think so, but I’m sure they are bad people.
tphillip37 is a junior redneck racist bubba just like levi. he knows it is true not because dick armey said it, he looks in the mirror and sees it.
Hey to all those Bubbas out there. We already gave the stupid white guy the last 8 years , why not try and smart black guy? Dick Armey thinks we are all stupid.
Sadly, this racist issue among voters may be more important than supporting a qualified candidate for having the same ideals.
I worry about this too.
A year ago I moved with my family from just outside of Detroit to just outside of Richmond, Va. There is plenty of NASCAR spirit around here. Regardless, it is still much better than Detroit. Motown and most of the surrounding suburbs are falling to pieces. I would like to ask Dick if there any white people that vote Republican who are not Bubba’s. I would also like to tell him he is a worthless asslick. But since he is a republican and he did say those words they must be true. I wonder what the people of two failed cities like Detroit and New Orleans should be called? They repeatedly vote Democrat while their schools suck, their leaders suck (See Kwame K. /The Hip-Hop Mayor), their police force suck, and their city services suck. Yet they would never ever vote republican? This is a stupid article about a stupid Congressman. Cut, print, suck.
An article from the BBC.com called “Why rednecks may rule the world” A pretty good explanation of America and American politics.
