How Was State Representative Jeffrey Wood Driving Before His OWI Arrest?

October 23, 2009

I post this not to beat up on State Representative Jeffrey Wood.  Clearly there are some very serious issues that he needs medical help with, and no one should make light of that.  I have not, and will not go beyond the rules of common decency with this story.  But I think based on his actions he needs to resign his elective office, and failing to do that, the State Assembly must proceed with an expulsion resolution.  I have been very consistent over many posts about the need to deal more realistically with matters dealing with those who operate a vehicle while intoxicated.  When you read about the way that Jeffrey Wood was driving think about how you might have felt to be on the same road as he was at the time this happened.  Also consider that this type of driving happens all the time on our roads due to the those who think it their right to drink and drive.  (It should be noted in this particular case of Wood that prescription meds seem to have been involved rather than alcohol.)

Wood was arrested in Tomah on Wednesday afternoon after a citizen reported a dangerously erratic driver.  Meanwhile, a witness said that Wood was driving so dangerously before his arrest that “he could have killed anyone on the streets.” Jeanette Marculis was driving behind Wood on Highway 21 on Wednesday on her way to Wal-Mart in Tomah with her 11-year-old daughter.

Her daughter suggested calling police after Wood swerved onto the shoulder of the road and then into oncoming traffic. Marculis said Wood again swerved into a line of traffic and some cars had to go off to the side to miss him.

Marculis said Wood almost rear-ended her car after she pulled into a parking lot, and then almost had a head-on collision with another vehicle.

She said she was shocked to learn Wood was a state lawmaker, and said he should resign.

I had not heard this part of the story until reading here how we was driving, and I am outraged that this person sits in the State Assembly. He damn well could have killed someone with his actions. Knowing the deadly impact of drunk driving (even though that was not the fault of Wood in this case) from 12 years back on our family I am glad to know that you use your blog for promoting some action on this matter. I have read some of your other posts about drinking in Wisconsin and am glad to say we are of one mind on this matter, I thank you very much.
