Daniel Hardekopf, A Hero In Blanchardville Fire

December 21, 2009

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

In the midst of all our personal plans for the holidays and the spirit of the season, comes tragic news from Blanchardville, Wisconsin.   The sadness over the news about the loss of four lives due to a fire is felt by all.  There are no words to say as comfort for those families who are crushed by the news at this time of year.

Out of the tragedy comes news that one of the victims was more than just another name of one who lost his life.  Instead, we find that Daniel Hardekopf was trying to save the lives of the other three, and had re-entered the building to protect life, and make a profound difference.  In the end he would never make it, through no fault of his own trying, and so will always be remembered as a hero.

There are so many times when we read and hear of those in society who are selfish and lack responsibility.  So when we hear the news of one like Daniel Hardekopf who faced fear and the heat of fire to do what was right while battling the odds, reminds us all that there are real heroes in our midst.  At this holiday season for the four families there will be plenty of grief.  But I also hope there is reflection given to the best that still guides and motivates some who strive to make a real difference.

Dan is our hero. He went back in to try and save our son, Cody along with Jill and Brian. He will always hold a special place in our hearts.

Dan was my Dad, and was the greatest guy you could know. He watched out for everyone, and I am glad to see everyone that both knew and now know it. Thank you for posting this, it means a lot to our family.

Danny is truly a hero in my mind and heart. His sister Lori is correct in saying he would never leave anyone behind and that is why he did what he did. There are are great deal of military personal now a days with all the newer generation that probably would never had done what he did. It would of been my pleasure if he was in the serviceand I could have served right beside him. He would have done the uniform and his country just as proud as he did his family and friends when he chose to save others in the fire without regard for his own life, That what HEROS do. Thank you Danny for your friendship, Love, thougtfulness and ultimate kindness. I Love you big BRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
