Senate Republicans Just Love To Filibuster

December 21, 2009

Interesting.  But considering what we have witnessed these past months from the Republicans who have no sound ideas for the nation as proved by the lack of any meaningful ideas on health care,  this is not surprising.

The political scientist Barbara Sinclair has done the math. In the 1960s, she finds, “extended-debate-related problems” — threatened or actual filibusters — affected only 8 percent of major legislation. By the 1980s, that had risen to 27 percent. But after Democrats retook control of Congress in 2006 and Republicans found themselves in the minority, it soared to 70 percent.

Some conservatives argue that the Senate’s rules didn’t stop former President George W. Bush from getting things done. But this is misleading, on two levels.

First, Bush-era Democrats weren’t nearly as determined to frustrate the majority party, at any cost, as Obama-era Republicans. Certainly, Democrats never did anything like what Republicans did last week: G.O.P. senators held up spending for the Defense Department — which was on the verge of running out of money — in an attempt to delay action on health care.

More important, however, Mr. Bush was a buy-now-pay-later president. He pushed through big tax cuts, but never tried to pass spending cuts to make up for the revenue loss. He rushed the nation into war, but never asked Congress to pay for it. He added an expensive drug benefit to Medicare, but left it completely unfunded. Yes, he had legislative victories; but he didn’t show that Congress can make hard choices and act responsibly, because he never asked it to.

Yeah but that Air Force thing never happened and has already been proven bunk, just like all the right-wing talking points on health care. Just baloney.

First of all I apologize for not commenting on the “Mitt Romney’s Mormon Underwear” post.

So, lets get rid of the damn filibuster idea by bribing all of the Dem “Sticks in the Mud” and then taking a vote for cloture at 1:30 in the morning and ram this sucker through.

Blackmail threats made by the White House (for Nebraska’s Ben Nelson to vote for the healthcare bill or face the threat of the closing of Offutt Air Force Base which employs 10,000 in his state). Just when I thought I couldn’t be any further outraged by the actions of this horrific administration, I was proved wrong. This is utterly despicable and I am more ashamed of our elected officials that I ever thought possible. This group of back-stabbing traitors in the White House makes Rod Blagojavich look like a saint.

“Mr. Bush was a buy-now-pay-later president.”

Then President Obama truly is a buy now and I have no idea how we are going to pay for it President.

    Oh, yes print mo’ money.

Bankruptcy shmbankruptcy who gives a rat’s behind.
