Defeated USA Hockey Team Could Have Been More Sportsmanlike

February 28, 2010

Yes, it was a long hard-fought hockey game on Sunday afternoon between Team USA and Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Yes, it went into overtime.  Yes, Team Canada prevailed.  But then the most uninspiring moment of the entire Olympics took place shortly afterwards at the awards ceremony.

Team USA, while winning the silver, put on the most dour and somber faces for the world.  They acted not as if they had made it to the Olympics and defeated a number of teams to get to the final match-up.  They acted not as it they had just played a fantastic game, but instead looked like they had been told they were going to the front line in a war zone.

Come on!

Every other athlete who won the silver or bronze over the past two weeks has been graceful and full of pride in their achievement and honor of being at the Olympics.  But when the silver medals were placed around the necks of Team USA there was no glory.  A bunch of grumpy faces that were spent by a game.  I get the point they were tired.  But sadly the glum look was not due to fatigue, but more due to not winning.  That color does not look good on anyone.

That was not the face the United States should have sent to the watching world.  It was clearly not the face of sportsmanship.  Thankfully the rest of the athletes over the course of the games have put on their best faces for the world to see.

The men’s hockey team looked glum for sure ;but should they have looked like the Canadian Women’s team with their cigars, beer guzzling and champagne pouring all over themselves? Canada’s finest hour…I don’t think so.

Even football wins only get you wet with Gatorade poured on you.

I agree that it was not the best moment. I think part of it was the award ceremony coming so quickly after the defeat. Maybe if they had a couple of hours between the loss and the medal ceremony the disappointment would have been less visible.

it was an embarrasing display and a total lack of sportsmanship–and yes, ive played team sports and have lost, but that’s not the point.

hundreds of athletes get silver and bronze, thousands dont win ANY thing. and yet they are happy to compete and get what the get.

this hockey team was an embarrasment to this country.

I don’t know if you ever played sports but coming in second is not something to be proud of. This world is about losers and winner when I coached my teams were taught that anything but winning is failure and should never be proud of finishing second I was proud of the usa team they showed heart and they showed how finishing second feels, you are not the best and that is what sports are all about being the best.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! They just LOST the Gold, they are allowed to be upset about it. You can’t tell me the Canadian team would have been celebrating. Not to mention Crosby insulting Team USA in the interview after the game saying they should have won by more. What a Jerk. I’m glad it was Canada to win if it wasn’t USA but you can’t bash them for not being thrilled about losing.
