“Baby-Killer” Screamer Is Identified

March 22, 2010

UPDATED (thanks Solly)

Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas) has acknowledged that he was the one who shouted “baby killer” as Rep. Bart Stupak was speaking on the House floor Sunday night. He said he was referring to the reconciliation bill, not to Stupak.

Now what would we do to kid in a classroom that made such an excuse for his deplorable behavior?

Here is a picture of the one who hurled the verbal insult.

So who is Biden bonding with when he drops the f-bomb at the signing ceremony?

    It is a big deal.

When civility on the floor of any legislative body goes south it sends a message about the political tone of the state or nation that we all need to be mindful of. When the common good needed to make government operate fails, it fails for all.. The lack of real bonds between members is one reason we see more and more of this stuff. Not so long ago (in my lifetime) members stayed in Washington for longer periods of time (weekends) and therefore made friendships with members. There was the deeper appreciation for the rule that your opponent on one issue is often the supporter on another. The lack of bonding is due to many reasons. Some members leave for their districts to raise cash each weekend or meet and greet constituents. The lack of bonding and shared understandings makes for a more political and rhetorically driven Washington. If you do not know the other people it is easier to demonize them and slur them as was done Sunday night. To say that this event on the House floor last night was not important is to not understand the gravity of the underlying problem that is starting to make headlines.

compared to the bribery, this is a small issue–one beneath discussion.

This should put this non issue to rest.

“In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase ‘it’s a baby killer’ in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership,” the Texas Republican said in a statement released by his congressional office this afternoon. “While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself.”

Neugebauer said he has apologized to Stupak. “The House Chamber is a place of decorum and respect. The timing and tone of my comment last night was inappropriate.”

you might want to clarify, center-right in background. I think that’s Mike Pence of Indiana center-left foreground, which is who I thought you were referring to.
