Madison City Channel Survey Missed Gay Couples In Demographics

March 24, 2010

In my email box today was a survey from Madison City Channel conducted by the Wisconsin School of Business.  It was a very good survey and hit on various aspects of the channel along with creative ways to get feedback and understanding on what works and who watches.  But at the end when the demographics are tallied comes the obvious pothole in the survey.

When asked about marital status the following options are listed.

Single, never married.

Married.

Separated.

Divorced.

Widowed.

This is Madison, Wisconsin!   I suspect there are one or two gay people who live in the city and  might complete the survey and have a partner and be in a long-term domestic relationship and want that recognized….just a hunch.

I know the UW is gay friendly and that Madison City Channel is too.  So I am not jumping too high on this issue, and yet it rankles just a bit.  I placed a call to the station and they were very pleased to be made aware of the problem and will try to remedy it.  The university students who created the survey will most likely resolve the issue.  I am just puzzled how the lack of awareness about where a gay couple might place their mark was not obvious from the start.

I agree. Rather archaic wording for a survey. At the very least, there should have been a category for “Unmarried Partners.” How could the university students, AND their faculty adviser, be so ignorant?
