Spike O’Dell: WGN Radio “No Longer The Station That Mid-America Knows And Trusts”

June 29, 2010

The sentiments that so many average citizens and listeners all over the mid-west have been feeling over the past year about WGN radio was made loud and clear by Spike O’Dell, the former morning man for the station.   There is a tidal wave of opposition to the tossing aside of remarkable on-air talent at WGN, such as Steve Cochran, and Kathy and Judy, ‘our girlfriends.”   The fact there has been a landslide of anger about these thoughtless changes from listeners about the current tactics of radio management in their zeal to destroy a station should raise a red flag that these decisions are indeed wrong ones to take.

Any seventh graders could figure this out!

Why the jar-heads in the management wing at WGN Radio can not fathom this is beyond my ability to reason. Bottom line….there is no one  anywhere cheering what is happening to WGN radio.  Instead there is a growing chorus of opposition.

WGN was the station I grew up as a teenager, wanted to work at when I was in broadcasting, and relaxed to hour after hour as an adult.  I am saddened and shocked over what is happening to this beloved institution in Chicago.  The only thing that lifts my spirit over this matter is that I am not alone in the way I feel.

Which leads me to the latest concerning Spike O’Dell.  I have long applauded his retirement as I wrote in July 2008, “At age 54 he has the money to live as he wishes, and explore the world as he desires.”  I respect those who know when to stop climbing up and live life for every day, as opposed to grabbing for more.

Spike has remained quiet about the affairs at WGN radio….until now.

Former WGN-AM 720 morning man Spike O’Dell, who has been diplomatically quiet concerning changes at his former station, offered his unequivocal support for ousted midday host Steve Cochran via Facebook, saying it is “no longer the station that mid-America knows and trusts.”

O’Dell later explained Saturday that it seems “WGN is becoming ‘just another station’ on the dial with what is going on” and he “blew an ‘emotional gasket’ and blurted out my response” at news of Cochran’s exit.“Well Steve,” O’Dell, who retired from WGN-AM and broadcasting in December 2008, posted on Cochran’s wall, “as long as they are making all these changes, I hope they will change the call letters too. It is certainly no longer the station that mid-America knows and trusts. I don’t know if I am mad or sad. Sorry partner.”Cochran posted. ”At about 245p as I exited the men’s room (seems fitting) I was summoned to a meeting where I was sheepishly told today was my last at WGN.”

O’Dell’s note Friday was in response to Cochran’s status update hours after learning his Friday show was his last at Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co.’s radio station.

“So how was your day?”

O’Dell concluded his response by suggesting he and Cochran play some golf. “Not working is not a bad thing at all,” O’Dell wrote.

“A radio station has to evolve all the time,” O’Dell noted. “It just seems that WGN is becoming ‘just another station’ on the dial with what is going on now. It seems to have lost the neighborly or friendly feel to it. I think people want to turn on their radio and enjoy what they listen to — not get mad at it.

“I love that radio station so much,” he continued. “I guess that’s why it breaks my heart when I hear things through the grapevine or in the press. I have stayed pretty quiet the last year and a half. I’m not there any longer and no one cares what I think, and I’m fine that. That’s normal. But when I heard the news about ‘Cocky,’ I guess I blew an ‘emotional gasket’ and blurted out my response to his Facebook post.”

My husband and I are WGN’s target demographic. We are in our mid forties, upper middle income, live in the burbs, etc etc…..We grew up on WGN Radio and what is happening to this station is heart breaking.

Don’t blame the program director. He is doing what ownership wants.

    To the owners of WGN:

Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity already have radio shows. Chicago personalities like Wally and Bob and Spike were such a nice offset to the right wing barrage. It was nice to hear intelligent radio. Today, John Williams is by far the best. When he goes, the proverbial camel’s back will break.

Why you think we need the likes of Jarrett and Lasky and McConnell is beyond any intelligent listener who grew up on WGN Radio.

Please bring us intelligent, witty radio. My finger is on the pre-set button…..

I am devastated by the destruction of WGN radio. Before the new management ruined the station I listened from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I am now down to Greg Jarrett in the morning and John Williams (when he is on the air) from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Lou Manfredini on Saturday morning, and Dean Richards on Suncay morning. The rest can go back where they came from. WGN, which had such class is not a station of mostly trash. I feel I have been deprived of superior radio.

Just another ex WGN all-day listener who has taken WGN off the radio preset buttons. Between the inappropriate language and topics being discussed and the swing to pandering to the right wingnuts. Since WGN is going in that direction, I guess I’m now one of the happy all day listeners to progressive political talk on WCPT. Just so sad to see the wrecking of what three years ago I had playing on my radio nearly 24/7. So sad. I’ll miss the days when WGN radio was fun.

When I moved from the Chicago area to Wisconsin in 1997, the thing I missed most was WGN. Then…..I found that I could listen to it all day via the internet. What a wonderful surprise.

Then, in past years, many changes have taken place which have caused me to leave WGN for other stations. In a recent article, it offered that management is attempting to appeal to younger listeners. I certainly hope they mean over 18 because I would NEVER let a child under that age listen to Gary Meier whose program content is not appropriate for younger listeners on so many occasions.

I realize how difficult it would be to follow up with the likes of Uncle Bobby or Spike, but at least it would have been nice if they had even come a little close instead of going in the opposite direction.

    What a disappointment!!!

I have been a loyal WGN listener for several decades…it saddens me with what is changing @ the station…I even joked years ago when purchasing a car…one with all the “bells and whistles” and all the FM stations, CD capacity, etc., etc., that I should get a discount since the only radio channel I always have on is WGN…what a waste of all the other stations. They were useless to me. Now…well…I just will have to discover another one.
I feel the management has made a tremendous mistake in the changes. Life will go on…not a big deal…but I will no longer listen to WGN.

THANK YOU SPIKE…I HATE THAT I HAVE TO FIND A NEW STATION…I’VE ALWAYS HAD 72 ON THE DIAL, AND WGN WAS LIKE A FAMILY. I WILL MISS STORIES ABOUT AMY AND ROSS, JUST AS I MISS KATHY TELLING ABOUT HER TRIPS WITH HER GRANDCHILDREN. THE EARLY MORNING GUY COMES ACROSS AS AN BORING BLOW HARD OR BS EXPERT!! ALL WE HAVE LEFT IS JOHN THE KING WILLIAMS AND GARRY MEIER. BOB SIROTT HAD A NICE RELAXED NOON SHOW AND HE IS GONE. I DO LISTEN TO STEVE AND JOHNNIE AT NIGHT. HELP!!!

Is this our only level of appropriate outrage?
