Heavy rain and flooding forced the closure of the Eisenhower Expressway between Mannheim Road and 25th Avenue this morning, and standing water in both directions at Western Avenue was slowing traffic, the Illinois State Police said. The eastbound ramp connecting the Eisenhower to the Dan Ryan Expressway was closed.

Waves of rain, “torrential” downpours and extensive flooding has shut down roadways, slowed traffic and even led to the interruption of train service on two CTA lines Saturday morning.

There was “major flooding” early Saturday on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290), according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper. The trooper said the flooding was on the expressway between 25th Avenue and Mannheim Road and the lanes were not passable. Traffic was also slowed throughout the Eisenhower because of flooding and standing water, according to unconfirmed dispatch reports.

As of 3:30 a.m., the southern ramp on the Eisenhower Expressway leading east to the Dan Ryan was not passable due to flooding, according to a trooper.
