Look What Republicans Nominated For The U.S. Senate

August 20, 2010

The news stories for many months have drawn our attention to the fact that the Republicans have nominated some very ‘special’ people this year as candidates for the U.S. Senate.  Today the New York Times lumped them together, and this is how it reads in their editorial.

The party has nominated so many at the far right of the spectrum, as well as some other unusual choices — Linda McMahon, the candidate for the United States Senate in Connecticut made millions running the sex-and-violence spectacle known as World Wrestling Entertainment — that the Republican brand is barely recognizable. Consider:

Ken Buck, the United States Senate nominee in Colorado. A former district attorney, he has said that the separation of church and state is too strictly enforced and wants to eliminate the Energy and Education Departments. Until recently, he supported repealing the 17th Amendment, which provides for direct election of senators. In the primary, he said he should win because “I do not wear high heels” — his opponent was a woman. As a federal prosecutor, he was reprimanded by a United States attorney after he gave information about the weakness of a case against gun dealers to the defense.

Rand Paul, the United States Senate candidate in Kentucky and physician, who has criticized the minimum-wage law and the civil rights and fair housing laws. He wants to cut way back on unemployment insurance and has denigrated Medicare as “socialized medicine.”

Sharron Angle, the United States Senate candidate in Nevada, who believes that same-sex couples should not be allowed to adopt children, that the United States should pull out of the United Nations and that Medicare and Social Security should be phased out in favor of a privatized system. In May, she suggested to The Reno Gazette-Journal that if she failed to defeat her Democratic opponent, Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, then conservatives might have no choice but to turn to violence. “I look at this as almost an imperative. If we don’t win at the ballot box, what will be the next step?” she said.

Mike Lee, the United States Senate candidate in Utah, who said he favors repealing the progressive income tax and supports a low cap on liability for oil companies that cause extensive environmental damage. He is one of the many Republicans who support changing the 14th Amendment to prohibit American-born children of illegal immigrants from being granted citizenship.

Moderator Comment. I removed the one section of the comment below about the violent overthrow of the government. That type of thing is edited out here, as it would be in any newspaper, etc.

The Democrat Party has moved so far to the left that those of us just right of center are thought to be extreme right-wing radicals. It’s an optical illusion. The Tea Party is just right of center and the Democrats are extreme leftist radicals.

Linda McMahon is an ex-wrestler, as was Jesse Ventura. Ken Buck’s opponent always talked about how her high heels were going to walk the halls of congress, so he made his quip that he didn’t wear high heels, just workboots to contrast his opponents elitist status, while he worked the land and even had horse manure on his boots.

Rand Paul has expressed his complete support for the civil rights movement and law, but did say that the most difficult part for him was that a restaurant owner could not freely choose who to serve and who not to serve. He is opposed to raising the minimum wage as this limits the number of jobs available, especially for young people. Medicare is a transition to socialized medicine, and within a few years, if we don’t stop the Democrats and Obama with Obamacare, that will get us socialized and a single-payor system in no time.

Sharron Angle wants to stop Harry Reid and his minions from stealing away the Social Security Trust Fund money so something will be left for people to continue to get benefits. When asked about the original purposes of the 2nd Amendment, Sharron explained that there is the right to keep and carry firearms for personal and family protection.

Mike Lee wants to return to the original intent of the 14th Amendment where children born in the U.S. to foreign parents would not automatically receive birthright citizenship. Mike has a 5 point plan for addressing the problem of illegal immigration:

    1. Secure the Border.
    2. Enforce current laws to prevent employers from hiring illegals. When the work dries up, they will pack up and go home.
    3. No welfare benefits.
    4. No more anchor babies.
    5. No amnesty.

I think Mike makes a lot of sense on a host of issues that he addresses.

Jerry, they are nut cases, which means they are bad candidates.

It’s clear the NYTimes and yourself are against these candidates because of philosophical differences not because they are bad candidates.

And Ron Johnson, who thinks global warming is caused by sunspots and trees suck up excess CO2
