Political Trivia: Alger Hiss And Whittaker Chambers

November 12, 2010

Richard Nixon and the House sub-committee that was trying to ferret out the truth between Alger Hiss and Whittaker Chambers all met in New York on August 17th 1948.  It was then a most amusing thing happened.

The meeting took place at a posh New York hotel so that there would be privacy.   In attendance were the two famous men.    Hiss sat on a chair, and Chambers on the sofa.

After the two men had met, Hiss wanted to hear Chambers speak.  Chambers gave his name so Hiss could hear his voice.

When Hiss asked Chambers to speak at length to better hear the speech patterns RN gave Chambers a copy of Newsweek to read from.

The irony is….

….and most already see this one coming….

…was that Chambers was an editor for……

….TIME!
