Gay Tucson Hero Will Sit With Michelle Obama At State Of Union Address
January 24, 2011
Daniel Hernandez Jr., one of the heroes of the mass shooting in Tucson, Ariz., two weeks ago, tells ABC News that he will be sitting, along with his father, Daniel Hernandez Sr., with Michelle Obama at the State of the Union on Tuesday, which happens to be his 21st birthday.
“I’m both honored and excited to have the opportunity to travel to our nation’s Capitol for a once in a lifetime event. Also the chance to bring my father along for his first trip to Washington, D.C. The State of the Union is a pivotal moment because it is our opportunity to find where we are and where we will be going as a nation in this upcoming year,” Hernandez said.

Patrick and Pam,
I agree that it is no big or little deal for many people that this man is gay. I posted it the way I did for the folks who still have all the notions and hang-ups that make it a big deal.
It was only a few weeks ago that there was lots of anti-gay politics being played with DADT. We still have DOMA on the lawbooks. I can’t get married.
So yeah a little in your face with a gay man and this is no big deal all wrapped up for the SOTU is the reason for the post.
I think this is like a pride parade. You have to walk in the shoes of those marching. It is nice to be on the sidelines and show support, and that is wonderful. But it feels differently for those in the parade.
We are proud that in spite of John McCain telling folks why gay men should not serve in the military that a man saved a life and he happens to be gay. I suspect there are many gay men like him in the military.
Lots of reasons for the way I posted this blog entry. And as you can see I did it on purpose. I want people to ask why. I want people to think about it.
And thanks to those here who did.
Whydoes the fact that he is “openly gay” matter? Is this a gay issue? Does he primarily identify himself as gay or as a person? Did his sexual orientation have something to do with his actions? Are we to be supposed that a gay man would do this (I’m not)? Has the first lady ever sat so close to a gay person before (I have–and liked it)?
Why does it matter if he is gay. Once again we get the in your face militant attitude. I have a feeling there may be some straight people there also should we point them out?
Daniel Hernandez Jr is openly gay.
The copy doesn’t mention anything about Hernandez being gay. How do we know?
