Is This What Passes For Staff Work At Wisconsin State Capitol?

January 24, 2011

I do not want to come across as too critical with this post.  Yet, there is no polite way to say the obvious.

After reading a press release from Representative Kuglitsch’s office at the State Capitol  I think we should all pause before cutting education funds in Wisconsin.

The press release was written by Matthew Spencer, and clearly had no editorial review.

The first two paragraphs make my case.

Rep. Mike Kuglitsch voted in favor of a pair of bills that will create a tax deduction or credit for small businesses that are relocated to Wisconsin in SS-AB 3. SS-AB 4 was also brought to floor for to increase the funding of the Economic Development Tax Credit program by 25 million dollars.

The struggling private sector in Wisconsin is an aspect that Governor Walker wanted to begin to fix in his first month in office. High unemployment numbers will inevitably be on the decline with the passing of SS-AB 3. Incentives for businesses will encourage businesses in the surrounding states to relocate to Wisconsin, which, in turn will create jobs.

Not only is the writing painful to read but the facts in the press release are ‘creative’.  His text bristles with punctuation.

For example.

Wisconsin state has been backed by a Democratic majority in recent years and has spent a decade under Democrat Governor, Jim Doyle. While under Doyle, Wisconsin saw double digit unemployment and a nearing three billion dollar deficit.

Doyle served a decade?  Does Matthew Spencer think that Governor Doyle served 2 five-year terms?    In addition unemployment never hit double digits in Wisconsin.

Look, I am pleased that Spencer landed a job in the statehouse.   I do not know this guy but I do know the feeling of landing a job under the dome and the kick-ass way it feels.   I know it is a wonderful place to work and a great place where earnest people can make a difference.

I hope Matthew Spencer enjoys his time there as much as I did.

Therefore I write this post not to land too hard on what I suspect is a fine young man with his heart in the right place.  All I ask, and hope for, is that Spencer puts more effort and determination in to becoming a better writer.

It will not only make him look good, but also better serve the representative alongside whom he works.
