Saturday Song: Labor Song By Johnny Cash “Casey Jones” And “Orange Blossom Special”

February 26, 2011

There is no way to separate the weekly feature on this blog, Saturday Song, with the incredible news story that is dominating America.  That story being the assault on state labor unions.  That the news from Madison, Wisconsin and our statehouse is taking place within walking distance of my home makes this one of those moments in history when everything is connected to the central story.  As such I go back and pull out one of the great labor songs and let Johnny Cash perform it.

Casey Jones tells the story of a train conductor and his death on the line. The story of Casey Jones has lived throughout labor history, and even inspired a follow-up song by the Grateful Dead.

Before a live audience….and with your speakers turned up……..
