Giant Satellite Hurtling To Earth, Impact Expected September 23rd

September 18, 2011

Where do you think the satellite will crash?

This is rather exciting.

Is your insurance paid up on your house and car?

NASA space junk experts have refined the forecast for the anticipated death plunge of a giant satellite, with the U.S. space agency now predicting the 6 1/2-ton climate probe will plummet to Earth around Sept. 23, a day earlier than previously reported.

The defunct bus-size spacecraft is NASA’s Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS), which launched in 1991 and was shut down in 2005 after completing its mission. The satellite was expected to fall to Earth sometime this year, with experts initially pegging a weeks-long window between late September and early October, then narrowing it to the last week of this month.

There is a 1-in-3200 chance of satellite debris hitting a person on the ground — odds that NASA says are extremely remote. And some observers believe there’s a good chance the debris will fall into the ocean.

With an estimate of 18 small pieces actually reaching the planet surface and the knowlegde this surface consists of 71% lake, sea- and oceanwater chances are reeeally small any of these pieces will land in your backyard, let alone on your head. Don’t be surprises however if over a dozen or so pieces will end up on Ebay… I already have taken pictures of mine and I WILL sell it ;)

I hope it hits water and gets caught on film. It if does not burn up upon re-entry to our atmosphere, It would be awesome to see the impact.

Does homeowners insurance cover satellite collision coverage? How about auto/satellite collisions. Or will the insurance companies claim an “Act of God” exclusion?

Those falling satellites NEVER hit any one . Until they do. One small point if I may; the statement of probability is incorrect. The probability that one particular person is hit would be in the trillions.( 3200 X total world population ). Like the lottery there isn’t always a “winner”. ; )
