WGN Says Goodbye To Greg Jarrett, Listeners Rejoice At Departure

December 2, 2011

UPDATE…Steve and Johnnie rumored to leave WGN airwaves.

There is no way to state how glad I am to hear that WGN’s morning drive-time windbag Greg Jarrett is leaving the famed studios on the Magnificent Mile.  Greg Jarrett is off the WGN airwaves immediately.

I do not want to sound overly rude or look like I am kicking a man when he is down.  I sincerely hope Jarrett lands another radio job, but at a station I do not listen to.

There is no way to state how utterly unprepared Jarrett was to step into the WGN chair that Wally Phillips once broadcast from.  I am old enough to recall the magic connection that Phillips had with the listeners, and I am old-fashioned enough to think that style of broadcasting is still being sought by listeners.

Jarrett never even tried.

When Jarrett arrived at WGN he felt a need to state how many people he knew, and all that he had done in radio.  There was always a need to convey to his listeners that he was important.

Really?

A professional broadcaster need not tell listeners such a thing, the day-to-day on-air work will just allow that fact to be established.

After two years WGN listeners were still waiting.

If this all sounds tough about a person in radio, perhaps that is because I have high standards for the folks who are invited into our home.  When we turn on the radio we invite the radio host or broadcaster to be our guest.  In time, it is hoped the announcer is so welcomed they no longer need to knock.

That is how I truly feel about radio.

I recall the words penned by media columnist Robert Feder that sums up all one needs to know how Jarrett blustered his way into the Windy City.

It’s been more than a year now since Jarrett got off the bus from San Francisco and stepped right into the WGN morning job — arguably the most venerated and important radio position in Chicago — without one day’s prior experience in the market. From the moment he signed on here, he’s shown a penchant for parading his ignorance of local personalities and places. Nevertheless, his bosses repeatedly have defended their decision to hire him, even as they recently announced plans to cut his show back by 30 minutes. At least that’s a step in the right direction.

With Jonathon Brandmeier having been announced today as the new morning man at WGN radio I trust another line such as I penned in August 2010 will not be needed on CP.

Isn’t there another soccer match anywhere in the world that we can pay Greg Jarrett to attend, and have him off the WGN airwaves?  The best weeks recently for morning radio in Chicago were the ones Jarrett spent in South Africa.

As much as I would love to have Kathy and Judy come back, I have realized that is not happening. But the weekend would be a great time to grow a female team.

Who wants a frat party at 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. in the morning????!!!!. NOT ME! Brandmeier is VERY ANNOYING and NOT FUNNY!! I’ve listened to WGN for years and years, and enjoyed the WGN family but now the news, traffic and weather is more interesting than the host. I’ve stopped starting my day with such dribble. My radio no longer will be tuned to WGN ’til John Williams comes on.

I can only listen to Brandmeier for a few minutes in the morning before my anxiety kicks in. How about giving the time a few times?!!!

Am not enjoying Brandmeier..he does not make sense to me. I now listen to 78 or 1000.
Am age 80 and always listened to 720. Listen to Roe in the afternoon and adore Mike at 9.
He is extremely prepared and love the topics. What is Jarrett doing now? Yes, he was rather arrogant.

I am old enough to remember Wally Phillips,Uncle Bob, Spike O’Dell, when you replaced Greg Jarrett, why did you not put the “GIRLFRIENDS” back on the air!!!!! I am a guy and I loved to listen to the girlfriends, I would switch from the sports stations for the girlfriends. Now the only time I listen to WGN is for the Hawks and Cubs. If anyone else should be removed, it should be that arrogant Dave Kaplan, and replace him with the more knowledgable Todd Hollingsworth. Thank you Mark J. Walek former WGN listener

GET RID OF MIKE MCCONNELL ALREADY! He is arrogant and ignorant. Makes up his own facts all the time and is stuck in the 70′s. Look Mike, if you have to reach all the way back to the 1970′s to justify a point on a regular basis, then you are not well read enough for the Chicago market. Go back to Ohio.

I have listened to WGN since I have been a kid and it was Wally Phillips, then Bob Collins, then Spike O’Dell. I remember Spike saying there is no more loyalty at WGN. Not sure I know what he meant. I do not think Greg was the right guy and neither is Johnnie B. I think Johnnie B could be if he stops the dumb songs in the morning.

They should tell the ladies who do traffic to dump the dumb phrase” No Worries”

I hope WGN gets it right

As a long time listener to WGN, I have to agree with most of the comments about the new morning guy, Brandmeier. His style is not what I want to listen to in the morning-or ever! He is not the type to appeal to intelligent, sophisticated people who do not appreciate his silliness or lack of interesting topics. I too will be looking for other stations to fill the morning slot on my radio.

I have listened to WGN since Wally Philllips,Roy Leonard and then came our beloved Bob Collins, his passing was so tragic but Spike O’Dell stepped in and he couldn’t have been more gracious and appreciative to get the job and he knew Bob was a class act and hard to replace but Spike did ok he was funny and he filled a void. You all missed the boat when he left. Greg was ok but Brandmeier is awful and I have tuned in to another radio station. JB is brash, uses bad words, I think he is trying to get away with as much as he can. Get him off the air before he destroys WGN all together. Get Spike back……

Everyone is complaining about the programming… including ME! BUT… what many of you dont realize is that WGN is getting exactly what they want! They want the old time listeners to go away and they’re trying to attract the younger listeners. I’m with most of you… time to say goodbye… WBBM is just a news station and I’m looking for intelligent conversations and sometimes silly conversations like we got from Kathy and Judy, Im looking for some entertainment!… so long GN…. the ride was fun while it lasted!
