How Will NRA Explain Away Gun Shooting At Elementary School In Newtown, Connecticut?

December 14, 2012

UPDATE….A gunman killed 26 people, 20 of them children between the ages of 5 and 10,

Once again the insanity of gun ownership has raised it’s head and made headlines.  Once again the NRA has to claim responsibility for the bloodshed.

These type of stories about gun crimes come at such a pace we become immune to them.  Many in this nation pass them over as if it were another story about the fiscal cliff talks.   Is this not the second this week?  Or third?

The fact is the NRA controls the agenda by making sure that sensible and tough gun control legislation is not passed by hamstringing Congress.  When someone with a microphone has the decency and intellect to address gun violence, as did Bob Costas two weeks ago, the gun freaks go crazy on right-wing media.  Fact is, Costas was right.

Too many guns, too many shootings, too many deaths.

I keep asking on my blog when the NRA will start to pay for the burial costs from gun violence.  It becomes frightfully silent when such a suggestion is made, but this morning it seems that another round of burials will need to be paid for.

The NRA needs to be held accountable.

A shooter on Friday opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, leading to multiple victims, the Hartfort Courant newspaper reported.

All Newtown schools were placed in lockdown after the shooting, the Newtown Public School District said.

The shooter, an adult, was dead and two handguns were recovered from the scene, NBC News reported without citing a source.

Danbury Hospital had received three patients from the scene, a hospital spokeswoman told NBC Connecticut.

One child was carried from Sandy Hook Elementary School by a police officer, and the child appeared to have been wounded, the town’s weekly newspaper, the Newtown Bee, said on its website.

P.S. and we shouldn’t allow the sale of a goddamned assault weapon in the first place! Or large ammunition magazines or cop-killer bullets.

Deke, I have to admit, I silently thought you were over the top in your posts on the NRA. I was wrong. The promised “want to be a part of the solution” kabuki theater on display today at the NRA news conference was beneath contempt. Yes, Wayne LaPierre, the problem is not enough guns, not enough guns in schools (gee, you want a federal mandate that each school has armed guards? if that part of a conservative manifesto?) video games (would that be like the video game company the NRA partners with to create a shooting game?) and mental illness. BUT, we can’t have a decent federal registry and background checks on ALL guns purchases, private, gun show and dealer to see if there is a court decision on mental illness. If you buy a motor vehicle, whether from a private party, a car show, or a dealer, it is checked on the DMV data base to make sure it is street legal and not stolen, and that you don’t have child support arrears, parking tickets, OWI court orders preventing ownership or a past unpaid liability for an accident. But we can’t check a goddamned gun sale for an assault weapon! I thought it was hilarious that David Keene, the president of the NRA, started out the news conference by saying “this is the start of a conversation” on the problem, “but we’re not taking any questions.” Doesn’t conversation imply two way discussion? A good point was made in the news analysis that the NRA doesn’t represent its members, it represents the gun manufacturers. Poll numbers show a majority of NRA members and hunters and gun owners in general support common sense gun control. Only the NRA says the answer is mo’ guns, mo’ guns, mo’ guns. Others countries, like Japan, has kids that play video games, other countries have mentally ill people in their midst, violent American movies are more popular in other countries than in the U.S. What these other countries don’t have is the level of gun violence and easy access to hundreds of millions of guns that the U.S. has. I hope there is a special place in hell for Wayne LaPierre and David Keene.

Many good comments. A better way to rephrase the old cliche is “guns don’t kill people, gun owners do”. The vague version “ people do” takes the responsibility off the NRA, current laws and those enabling gun ownership of military style guns&ammo and puts in squarely on human nature, concluding that there will always be nuts that will commit mass murder, by some means.

Amazing range of silly arguments surfaced in the last few days, like car death statistics – sure, thats why we constantly improve cars safety, fight to toughen drunk driving laws. Same with guns, we need to work to make gun laws safer.

Excellent point, Kamil, about abortion. Same people that scream” making abortion illegal will stop it” ,in the same breath claim “ making assault weapons illegal will not stop mass shootings”. How does that logic work?

Get your head around this Mark.

Number of Murders by Firearms, US, 2009: 9,146

Number of Murders by firearms, Britain, 2008: 39

THAT’S what happens when a society has no guns, the murder rate by gun plummets to almost negligible because the nuts don’t have the tools to slaughter and don’t tell me they will just find other means because frankly that’s utter shite. If it weren’t the British would have maniacs rampaging through their schools and theatres with other means. THEY DON’T!!!

Want to try throwing out the witless banning knives because people get stabbed stupidity?

On the same day this atrocity took place in Newtown a knifeman attacked in a Chinese school stabbing 22 kids. Know how many died? NONE!!!

And there lies the difference between household tools and deadly killing weapons which have no other purpose but to kill.

As for abortion what sort of psycho are you? People make that personal decision for a variety of reasons, they don’t have anyone charging around dragging them away to an abortion clinic.

But they don’t have ANY choice of whether some mental case is going to murder them or their kids with a gun which is easier to acquire than an abortion is just to humour a bunch of backward infantile morons who want to play cowboy.

Sometimes certain individuals think, the only solution to get satisfaction should done by a gun. But I still believe, that permanent communication is the only way to avoid, that every three years somewhere a hidden, blocked aggression runs a surreal climax to a show down of an absurd outburst.
