James von Brunn, Another White Supremacist, Goes Crazy

June 10, 2009

Recall how the conservatives were bent out of shape when the Obama Administration released the report on right-wing extremists?  A study, after all, that was ordered by the Bush White House.  Today another example of a white supremacist going crazy, and another reason the report was valid.  There is every reason to track these people, keep them under constant watch by the government and legal authorities, and monitor their every burp.  They can pop off at any time.

The gunman was identified by several news agencies as James W. von Brunn, a man in his late 80s. According to a Web site maintained by Mr. von Brunn, he embraces a far-reaching conspiracy theory involving Jews, blacks and other minority groups. Early reports indicated that he lives in eastern Maryland.

    He wasn’t a right-winger!

I agree with you and also know you care about the gun problem in this country. With that in mind why not go undercover and poke around at a gun show and see just how large the white wacko population really is. You would have a great article to post after that!

I am a center-left Independent. I abhor racialist hate groups and anti-choice terrorists (those who block access to health clinics and intimidate women; not those who seek to provide support for adoption). I have not yet read the DHS report, but I agree that there is cause for concern. However, I think we need to be very careful how much authority we give our government to keep U.S. citizens who have not yet committed any crimes under surveillance. Do you support the warrantless wiretap authority that Congress gave to the Bush Adminstration? Before you advocate for taking away the rights of citizens who have abhorrent beliefs, just remember that you may need those rights someday.

Sorry, but simply wanting a stricter following of the constitution with regard to personal rights doesn’t make me a terrorist, it doesn’t even make me a conservative.

Some kind of paranoia oozing out, Rob. Do you belong to a right-wing group that the DHS is monitoring? What do you think of Ron Paul? How do you feel about William Long? Do you agree with Michelle Malkin when she says, “When a right-wing Christian vigilante kills, millions of fingers pull the trigger. When a left-wing Muslim vigilante kills, he kills alone.”

Just trying to establish a baseline here, Rob. The white supremacists are just one facet of the right wing threat to the constitution. The anti-abortion crowd and the bizarro Xtian fundamentalists, the right wing “militiasd” and the racists who think there’s a secret Obama foreign birth certificate somewhere also share a place in that particular constellation. Where do you fit in really, Rob?

It seems to me the report talked about extremist groups, and it appears, unfortunately, to be pretty accurate.

You say conservatives were bent out of shape because of the report, but you fail to mention why. The report mentioned groups of people that have no ties to white supremacy, lumping them in with the potential domestic terrorists. Sorry, but simply wanting a stricter following of the constitution with regard to personal rights doesn’t make me a terrorist, it doesn’t even make me a conservative.
