Walter Cronkite Reported To Be Very Ill

June 19, 2009

‘Uncle’ Walter Cronkite holds a special place in the life of America in the last half of the 20th century.  He was the face of calm and serious discussion when the world seemed tilted and out of sorts.  The news that is bombarding the internet about his health is sad to read.    I like to think of him either behind the CBS anchor booth, or out on his yacht sailing.   The insight and depth he had on so many domestic and world issues made him more than a newsman and solid reporter, but a great American, and true internationalist.

Former CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite is seriously ill, network sources told Media Bistro’s TV Newser blogyesterday. Last week, the network reportedly began updating the obituary for the 92-year-old newsman, who anchored the CBS Evening News for 19 years, earning him the moniker “Most Trusted Man in America.” When reached by EW, a spokesman for CBS News declined to comment on Cronkite’s health.
