When You Do Not Have Substance….

October 7, 2009

…go for a gimmick.

The Republican challenger to Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold plans to wear blaze orange at every campaign appearance between now and the 2010 election.

It helps that the Watertown business owner and political newcomer is an avid hunter. The super-bright color is worn by deer hunters because it stands out when the bullets start flying.

Westlake bought a blaze orange shirt on Saturday and wore it to two Republican rallies that day.

The Founding Fathers were as political as we are today. They knew they did not have the votes to ratify if they tackled the issue of slavery. A sectional understanding was morally wrong, but the only path that these men could seem to find. While the Constittion was passed it undermined what I think is the defining text of that time, The Declaration of Indepedence as it relates to one man owning another.

Thanks for comments, and I hope you are a long-time reader.

Good one dekerivers! That made me laugh! The founding fathers were also in a minority wanting to establish their own country free from England. Thus the Republic and not pure Democracy–preserve what is good and noble, without trampling on the rights of the minority view point.

That’s why, in my opinion, they didn’t settle the slave issue, unfortunately. They respected the rights of those who owned slaves until they could educate them out of it. But I’m sure they never dreamed of a war coming between the two sides of the republic in order to settle that difference.

The founding fathers did more good than bad. They only are human, after all. Now can we do the same?

When you write “turning the country back to the way the founding fathers envisioned” I thought you meant the GOP arbitrarily counting each black as 3/5 of a person again.

To bad the article missed the point!

He’s wearing Blaze Orange to be seen because he will be your next US Senator from Wisconsin. As such, he is accountable to you, the voter of Wisconsin, and he wants you to find him and tell him your concerns, problems, and ideas for turning the country back to the way the founding fathers envisioned; government of the people, by the people, for the people.
