A Shark In The Box

December 26, 2009

UPDATE….TYPO FIXED

For Christmas one of my presents to James was something he has wanted for several years.  A sewing machine.   How could the gift go wrong, given that I knew this was a  for-sure winner?  He has wanted to make table runners, fix a curtain here, and finish a project there.  So under the tree sat a big box for the last two weeks, nicely wrapped from Santa, with a Singer Sewing Machine inside.

Problem was once the box was opened and a smile flashed over his face it was soon discovered that the attachments such as the bobbin, needles, and such were not in the box.  But even more maddening was the make of the machine inside the box……SHARK!

What………..?

So folks I am one of the unfortunate and sad statistics today.  One of every five people expects to return a gift after the holidays, according to a poll by Consumer Reports.  And I will be one of them!

My family  never returned gifts as a rule.  If someone gave you a gift you were polite and pleased and that was all there was to it.    The whole idea of  ‘trading up’ with a gift leaves me cold and aware that there are parts of the holiday season that are gross.  But alas I will need to stand in line with those who are doing that  today as I get a new Singer Sewing Machine.  Thinking about it though maybe I should not be too hard on those others in line today.  After all they may have found a SHARK in their box too!

It was a very nice Christmas, and though the sewing machine was a glitch, it did not mar the day at all. Lots of folks here for a big dinner and then some of us went to light show at a local park with a Holiday theme about 10 at night. A long day….a real good day with special friends. I hope you had a very nice holiday too!

Gives new meaning to the term “jumped the shark”! I can sympathize with you though. I always want Christmas to be perfect for everyone, but it never is. Too many high expectations that are impossible to meet. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to just go with the flow, enjoy the season and try not to stress out about everything. Easier said than done, though! Hope you had a merry one anyway. 🙂
