What 90 Days Can Get You…If You Are Israel

What could Israel have obtained for 100 days?

This is insane.   If there are any new faces in Washington that truly think the old ways of conducting business needs to be changed, well, this story should be the one to make them react.

For 90 days of holding off continued illegal construction on occupied lands Israel will get 20 advanced fighter jets (worth $3 billion and will also be able to buy 20 more), and other military aid, and a long list of American pronouncements and actions that run counter to sensible international policy.

On the 91st day Israel does what it always does.  Go against world opinion and inflame the Middle East by continuing illegal construction on lands they stole from the Palestinians.

Lets see how much Washington has changed after the recent election by watching how this story is reacted to inside the Beltway.

Anyone placing bets?

The pledge by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to push for a new, one-time-only freeze of 90 days on settlement construction in the West Bank represents a bet by the Israelis and the Americans that enough can be accomplished so that the Palestinians will not abandon peace talks even after the freeze ends.

The Israelis would stop most construction on settlements in the West Bank for 90 days to break an impasse in the peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

Those negotiations began in Washington in early September, but soon faltered over Palestinian anger at resumed settlement construction, when a previous 10-month freeze ended.

In return, the Israelis would receive 20 advanced American fighter jets and other unspecified military aid, as well as American promises to oppose any Palestinian attempt to obtain international recognition of statehood in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza without Israeli agreement.

One has to wonder if this is realted to Obama’s negative comments about Isreal. Interestingly, he made these comments in Indonesia–a muslim state– where homosexuality earns you 100 lashes with a ratan cane and where a majority supports a strict interpretation of Sharia tyrany–or law, I guess.

In Isreal–where gay men and women may serve openly in the military since 1993–people must be confused by a foolish president who is still shocked that they don’t want to bend over and grab their ankles for a morally defunct people whose “government” still will not recognize Isreal’s sovreign right to exist. How can Obama expect Isreal to be interested in the hypocritical demand that palestinians be granted the right of return while Isrealis cannot live in palestinian lands? I say go ahead and build settlements and walls because there is no indication that the muslims are even slightly interested in peace. To think this is a conflict over houses is to be ignorant.

As always, there is the not-so latent racism which cannot expect palestinians to behave like civilized people who can solve problems without katushia rockets or to recognize that peace demands real compromise from both sides.

And all of this from Obama who was to restore the respect of the world toward America. The G20 and his other visits represent more of the same from the greatest diplomatic failure of a president we have ever had.

    1. Few points…..

We could do it your way….in 25 years or less Jews will be a minority in Israel.

Or you can help create Palestine.

It is not a fight over houses….it is a fight over land that was taken. Land the international community wants returned.

One might appreciate a rocket if you were being blasted by helicoper gunships made in America. No reason for anti-American anger on the Arab Street.

I also wonder why it is ok to not follow UN resolutions when Israel is concerned…but we invade Iraq when they do not abide by UN votes.

I can almost write your response…..but still I think these are points worth pondering.

I think that when one reviews previous land for peace deals there is clear evidence that Isreal has offered to return close to 99% of the land it conquered in exchange for peace. Why can’t the palestinians compromise? They have to get every single thing or they take their ball and go home?

Let the palestinians first recognize the right of Isreal to exist and renounce violence and terrorism. Let the arab countries end their discrimination against Isreali citizens and fully recognize Isreal. How can you reasonablely argue that Isreal should make concessions to people who do not recognize them or reject violence as a tool of diplomacy?

Seriously…is that too much to ask?

As for the UN? A waste of time.
