Might Republican Support For Walker Union Busting Bill Be Cracking?

February 16, 2011

Personally I do not think so.

Before I get to the but…..

Last night I had a nice conversation with a former leader in the Wisconsin State Legislature.  That person told me that there was no doubt that a unified Republican vote would be cast in support of Governor Walker’s union busting bill.

I agreed….and have thought so from the start of this mess last Friday.  This is all about the nuclear option, and I do not think they are going to stop until the last GOP man and woman is over the cliff.

Today however comes this…..

There are indications that support among Republican legislators for Gov. Scott Walker’s plan to remove collective bargaining rights for public workers might be starting to crack.

State Sen. Dan Kapanke of La Crosse told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he didn’t know where Republicans stood on the proposal that drew more than 13,000 protesters to the state Capitol on Tuesday.

When asked about the position of Republicans, Kapanke said he didn’t know the answer.

This country is dooming itself to go back to our own history, which is similar to what is going on in Mexico now. There is no social safety net there, and no ability to have organized labor, so people have to flee that country. Yet Mexico is one of the richest countries in the world. The rich will never pay people what they are worth, because they have to make money off of what someone’s labor is worth. Labor unions are the only tool that the people have to tighten that margin between the actual worth of the labor and the amount of pay one gets. Now we have managed to build a society where the rich has managed to make the government pay for their employee’s raises in the form of tax cuts and earned income credits. It is way too complex to explain in a paragraph, and sadly it is way way too complex for the conservative mind to understand.

Its time the unions get out of the Public sector. Walker is a modern day hero of the taxpayer. I applaud him and support him and hope the union loses collective bargaining rights. This isn’t some trucking company abusing Teamsters, it is the hard earned dollars of the working folks who pay taxes in Wisconsin.
