Catholics Call GOP Speaker Boehner “Anti-Life”, Failing To Uphold Catholic Moral Teachings

It has always been one of those things that gnaws at my sensibilities.

Far too often conservatives argue and fight for ‘life’ issues that deal with contraception and abortion, but then get all fiscally tight-fisted and not understanding the needs of the real person after birth.  The issues that conservatives just get down-right mean over include  immigration, paying teachers a wage commensurate to the work they do for society, and providing health care for all.

With that in mind comes news today that Speaker of the House of Representative John Boehner has been called out by prominent Catholics for not upholding basic Catholic moral teachings.  Boehner is a life-long follower of Rome.  More than 75 professors at Catholic University and other prominent Catholic colleges have written a stern rebuke to the Republican leader.

“Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the church’s most ancient moral teachings,” the letter says. “From the apostles to the present, the magisterium of the church has insisted that those in power are morally obliged to preference the needs of the poor. Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it.”

The letter writers criticize Mr. Boehner’s support for a budget that cut financing for Medicare, Medicaid and the Women, Infants and Children nutrition program, while granting tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations. They call such policies “anti-life,” a particularly biting reference because the phrase is usually applied to politicians and others who support the right to abortion.

The letter of course could have been sent to almost every member of the GOP ( and some readers to this blog) as the message needs to be heard by all those who spout one thing, and then act in a far different way.

If conservatives are going to be ‘pro-life’ than by all means be consistent.

From birth to old age walk the talk.  From education, health care, immigration, and the right for personal fulfillment show with actions what the words which are too easily spouted are all about.  How is it that liberals are always more ‘pro-life’ than the ones who claim that term for themselves?

Sadly, Speaker  Boehner and those like him are far more interested in hypocrisy than in being truly ‘pro-life’.  After all they think there is more to gain from the politics of talking the talk, rather than walking the walk.

I know one reader from Green Bay who does the same.

  1. Ah well, the last I looked the Catholic Church was worth billions. So how much do they use to help the poor? And last I read, Jesus did not call on the people to ask the government to tax the other guy to help the poor. He commanded us to help each other.

Theologians are not the authority in the Church. They can shut up whenever they want to.

The Conservatives want the CHURCH to support the poor, by returning money to the PEOPLE to donate to the Church. The theologians needs to be silent and let the Magisterium speak.
