National Icon Jerry Lewis Should Host MDA Telethon

August 23, 2011

Common sense and national pride should dictate that Jerry Lewis, an amazing humanitarian, as well as a comedian of international stature like few others, should be the host of the MDA telethon.

Labor Day without Jerry Lewis and his kids would be like a cookout without the grill.  It just is not possible.

Like a  gazillion other Americans I grew up on Jerry Lewis and his Labor Day Love Network.  His inside group of Las Vegas performers were fun to watch.  (Where else was I going to get a chance to see Shecky Greene?  I am serious.)

I use to call in and challenge my other classmates over the small donation I made, and was elated that one year a classmate, Lisa Biro, had heard it read out over local television.  When I moved to Madison a stop by the mall on Labor Day where the local portion of the telethon was being broadcast was just a part of the holiday.  Putting some cash into a firefighter’s boot was the annual way to give.

So it was with sadness that I heard recently the much beloved Jerry Lewis was not to be a part of this year’s trimmed down telethon.  To be honest, that is an outrage.

But word this weekend seems to paint a somewhat altered version of what may happen when the telethon airs.  Now it seems that Lewis has been reinstated for the telethon.

It is my hope, and I strongly suspect every American’s hope, that Jerry Lewis gets to host and speak to the nation.  There will not be a dry eye coast to coast, but if I know Jerry he will find a way to bring a smile.  And knowing Jerry that will be the easiest part of the night for him.

Lets all pull for Jerry and his kids.

God loves them!

    William,

That dog of an arguement has been used so often. It no longer hunts.

Have you read anything about disability rights? Lewis and his antiquated use of pity to raise money is out of sync–decades old thinking that perceives people with disabilities as less than human. Lewis is despised within the disability community. Despite all the money he raised he has caused more harm than good.

Some of the best memories from my childhood in the early 70’s were the MDA “carnivals” my family and friends held in our back yard during summer. MDA would mail you a kit with posters, ideas, promo material, etc. to get you started. On Labor Day the local tv station would announce how much we earned for Jerry’s kids. It was all great fun. I think that whole carnival tradition has fallen by the wayside in recent years.
