Over the past several years James and I have been involved in assisting a friend with Alzheimer’s disease.   It has been an emotional and educational experience.  From power of attorney duties for health and finance, leading up to guardianship earlier this year, we have witnessed first-hand the devastation caused by Alzheimer’s.

Albert was the oldest student in a world language college course taught by James.  He wanted to speak with his mother in her native tongue in the after-life.  From that touching beginning a friendship soon started that would include Albert’s presence at our election night gatherings along with holiday meals.

In time Albert asked for help in making sure his day-to-day needs were more easily handled, and wondered if we might help.  We said yes, as friends do, never thinking that the road ahead involved a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.    Once we were engaged in the process, however, we treated Albert like family (or for readers of this blog, better than the way we get treated as family) and made every decision only after lots of research and thought was given.

I can assure my readers that Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most dreadful ways to suffer.  This disease provides only a series of deeper valleys to navigate.

That is why the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Alliance have worked so hard to plan for the upcoming Alzheimer’s walk.  All can make a positive difference by helping raise awareness about this disease, and collecting the needed funds to assist those living with Alzheimer’s in our community.

Since meeting Albert I have often written about this journey that we all have taken together.  I would like  to link them in a neat fashion, but since WordPress is having some ‘issues’ at the present time I will add the links in a less than elegant fashion.  I ask that you might take the time to read them.
