Roy Leonard Selling Decades Of Pop Culture Used For WGN Radio Interviews

September 29, 2011

For many years when I visited my Mom and Dad on Sunday I had a traveling companion.  He was the perfect  person to ride with as he always provided interesting conversation, and had a perfect modulated way of speaking.

He was my radio companion, Roy Leonard, who was host of a Sunday morning radio show on WGN.   Leonard presented news about movies and plays, music and art with a discriminating eye and a joyous feel about the array of entertainment to be enjoyed.

Today the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Leonard is having an estate sale.  For a couple of years Leonard’s wife had been sick, and there is now a need to move and downsize.  Caffeinated Politics hopes that Leonard can get back to blogging soon after the move is finished.

WGN broadcasting legend Roy Leonard is downsizing because he and his wife recently moved into The Mather retirement community in Evanston.

The sale, featuring about 1,000 books that Leonard read over the years to prepare for his interviews with authors and celebrities.

He joked about the difficulty of downsizing from the house where he and Sheila Leonard lived for 43 years and raised six boys. “I’m going to be 81 in January, and yet I’ve got my health, I can still walk the dog,” he said. “I can still unpack books and CDs, which I think I’ll be doing for the rest of my life.”

The estate sale will feature about 500 CDs — most of them jazz — as well as furniture, theater memorabilia and the books. “There’s a number of really good, signed first editions, everything from Pearl Bailey to Ingrid Bergman to Steve Allen,” said Walter Chruscinski of New Trier Sales.

I remember the song Family Classics on WGN since I was a young boy! Every time I hear it I see Green grass, sunshine, and strangely, I see the cooking of roast chicken.

Sorry, I meant to ask the name of Roy’s Labrador dog when he took over the Family Classics Tv show after Frazier Thomas died. How many years was the dog on the show with Roy Leonard. Thanks.
