Poll: Do You Sniff A Book Before Buying Or Reading It?

All my life I have sniffed the books I read.

When I was a small boy my sister always told me that you could tell a good book by the scent from the printed pages.  On this one topic she was right. From those early years I have found myself sniffing books in stores and the ones I lounge in bed at night and read.

In conversations with others when the topic of reading comes up I ask if I am alone in liking the smell of a book, or if others also sniff the ink or the aged pages.  I can report I am not alone in this behavior.

So…..how about you?

The “scent” of books is one of the things that draws me to public libraries. Some say the smell is from the hard-cover books and paperbacks decomposing (or it might be mold). But the fragrance is so enticing and welcoming to me. It touches my heart to see children going to one of Madison’s neighborhood libraries — excited about the prospect of checking out books or enjoying a local story hour.
