It’s so interesting, from sea level to when the atmosphere runs out at around 83,000 foot is about the same as a 100 foot diameter beach ball with a 0.10″ metal feeler gage slapped down on top of the surface of the beech ball.

From the beach ball to the top surface of the feeler gage is equal to that thin layer of protection afforded the blue planet called atmosphere.

We call it ‘air’. And where at its limits only the Lockheed SR-71 spy airplane could manage to find a few precious molecules of oxygen to keep the fires burning in the two Pratt-Whitney engines. President Bill Clinton called a Thermodynamic Engineer by the name of Ben Rich working at the famed Skunk Works division of Lockheed Aerospace to ask just how high the SR-71 Blackbird could fly. Ben answered, “Sir, that would be 83,000 foot.”

Every school child ought to read Ben Rich’s book titled, “Skunk Works” to really understand the wonder and uniqueness of the Blue Planet.
