I thought this final essay from Eric Sevareid from 1977 was just something everyone should again recall when so much fluff can be found on the news. There was a time when more solid professionals were not a rare thing to hear from on national programs. That is not to say that we do not have top-rate serious and wise reporters today bringing us the news, but we must be honest and say not many have the same heft which came from the era of Eric Sevareid.
When now tuning into the national evening broadcasts there is no more expectation of finding someone like Sevareid to make one think or ponder. Instead of some meaningful words we are too often treated to a feel good story that takes up the final minutes of a broadcast.
