TV Ads Against Abe Lincoln For President—Could Lincoln Be Elected Today?

June 16, 2012

I argue President Lincoln was the most important person to sit in the White House.  While President Washington showed how the transfer of power can make our democracy function, and President Jefferson greatly expanded the size of America, it was Lincoln who maintained the nation must–and would– stay united.

Lincoln remains my favorite president, and was clearly the most essential one for our country.

But what if Abe Lincoln had never been elected?  What if he had lived in a time where the technology and political methods, that are so freely employed today, could have been available to be used against him?

What if these ads had appeared in 1864?  What if these cheap theatrics had been available at a most perilous time for this country?  If we can look back and see the calamity that would have befallen the country had Lincoln not been elected, how can we be so at ease with what passes for politics today when these type of ads are endlessly aired?

While the following ads are amusing, they are also very telling about where we are in this nation when it comes to how we elect the most important people to office.
