Trivia About Fiscal Cliff Bill In House Of Representatives

January 1, 2013

This is interesting to consider as we await the fate of the legislation regarding the fiscal cliff in the House of Representatives.  Speaker Boehner has some latitude.

Under an obscure House rule last invoked on New Year’s Eve 1970, during the final three days of a Congress the speaker can bring whatever legislation he wants to the floor under whatever terms he chooses.

Ol’ Peter King of NY and the other NE republicans (and dems) were incensed that the Sandy relief bill wasn’t considered. He said the republicans can find NY when it’s time to raise campaign money, but not when it’s time to help people need help, after the NY and NJ and CT delegations voted for help for Gulf hurricaines and Western fires and Midwest tornadoes. Guess Boner and Cantor didn’t want to add to the 47%.
