House Republicans “Demanded Ransom”

October 1, 2013

We are not about to pay those who want to hold our nation for ransom.

That was pretty much the tone and words from a well- grounded and reasoned President of United States today as he addressed the nation.

“They demanded ransom,” Mr Obama said.  He blamed conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives for the shutdown, saying “one faction of one party” was responsible because “they didn’t like one law”.

“They’ve shut down the government over an ideological crusade to deny affordable health insurance to millions of Americans,” the President said at the White House.

I am not sure what history books, if any, the current crop of House members have read, but they differ greatly from the ones I have read.  The problem is that too many of those elected are not grounded in logic, but fly with the latest red-meat crowd-pleasing line that will garner applause at the local fish fry and beer hall rallies.  We are not talking about Rhodes Scholars when we look at the make-up of the Republican-led House.

The members of congress all the years of my growing up and into my early adult life differed on a whole raft of issues.  But never did the entire political process break down due to the  unbending antics from a small group of partisan thugs.    What is playing out now from the House is not how the process is supposed to work,  It shows what happens when people get elected out of anger instead of an understanding about government, and the role they can constructively play once in congress.

There is no way that any parent would allow a child to get away with the stunts that the House Republicans have pulled in the past week, and no respectable Democrat can allow for the tactics used to shut down our government be allowed to sway policy.  To pay ransom once is only to invite more chaos for the next manufactured crisis that the GOP will pull out of their rumps.
