Saturday Song: Tonsillectomy Of Ernest Tubb

February 22, 2014

The greatest surgery in country music history was the botched tonsillectomy that created Ernest Tubb.  Tubb died in 1984 at age 70, and is remembered for a pioneering force in the rollicking form of country music called“honky-tonk.”

Going into the surgery, Tubb made every attempt to sound just like his idol, the yodeling, riveting Jimmie Rodgers.  Though the doctor told Tubb the operation might improve his singing voice, he was never again able to yodel.  Tubb was furious about this development and considered a lawsuit.    As a result he needed to find his own singing style.
