WLS Radio Ready To Throw Rush Limbaugh Out The Door

March 5, 2015

There is about to be a major demotion for Rush Limbaugh in the Chicago radio market.  There are no tears to be shed on this blog or among others who get enough oxygen to their brain.  The harsh and abrasive style of radio that Limbaugh spreads is not good for the political culture of the nation, and more to my heart his style of broadcasting is not the type that I like to hear on radio.    So from my perspective anyway this news is viewed it is a very good thing.

I have challenged both liberals and conservatives over abusing the public radio airwaves.  As a former radio broadcaster, and a lifetime radio listener I come to my point of view after thinking a great deal about this topic.  Heck, in many ways I have lived this topic.

From the nights of falling to sleep with the radio in my ear as a teenager, to the medium allowing me a paycheck for a number of years, to now having radio presets in almost every room in the house and multiple layers in the car I can lay claim to one fact.  I love radio, and care deeply about it.

That is why I was so insulted by the words that were often spewed by Rush Limbaugh over the airwaves.  In one case he even called a women in regards to contraceptives “a slut”.

Over the past two decades there has been an erosion of civility on the airwaves.  It has taken place on both right-wing and left-wing stations as the announcers and hosts seem more interested in red meat tactics for political purposes than striving for high marks in broadcasting.   While there are still many stations that will not stoop to the level we have witnessed with Rush Limbaugh, it remains unsettling to know that national standards are slipping, and no one seems willing to apply the brakes.

After the “slut” comment from Limbaugh the nation did talk about the political aspect of the remark, but I heard almost nothing about the misuse of the public airwaves for that type of talk.   Personally insulting a woman by calling her  “a slut” and ” a prostitute” on the public airwaves is a far cry from what they were designed for, and what most people turn the radio on to hear.

Therefore I am delighted that Rush Limbaugh will be off the air on WLS radio.

Rush Limbaugh, who’s been a fixture on WLS AM 890 for more than 25 years, is about to get the bum’s rush from the Cumulus Media news/talk station, sources said Wednesday.

If all goes as planned, Limbaugh’s syndicated talk show, which airs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, will be dropped by the end of March, according to insiders at WLS.

A Cumulus Media spokeswoman declined immediate comment. But a source familiar with the decision said it was based on the show’s diminished ratings and failure to generate advertising revenue for the station, adding: “It’s impossible to sell.”

Limbaugh’s departure would continue the overhaul of WLS’s lineup, which began in November when Steve Dahl replaced Roe Conn and Richard Roeper in afternoons. In January, Big John Howell replaced Bruce Wolf and Dan Proft in mornings. And late last month Jonathon Brandmeier was signed to host a syndicated show that will replace John Kass and Lauren Cohn from 9 to 11 a.m. Once Limbaugh is dropped, Brandmeier’s show is expected to air for its full three hours — from 9 a.m. to noon.

A 27.5 percent decline in revenue at WLS — from $13 million in 2013 to less than $9.5 million in 2014 — was a contributing factor in a change in top management last week.
