World (Including America) Needs To Respond To Refugee Crisis

September 6, 2015

There is no way for most of us to fathom the levels of despair and hurt the refuges fleeing the tinderboxes of Africa are feeling.  The photos and stories from just this past week alone are enough to tear at the heart and makes one wonder how lives can be again assembled.

Today Pope Francis implored Catholic institutions throughout Europe to show mercy to the flood of refugees arriving on their shores by offering them shelter.   It is a lesson that also needs to spread to this nation of plenty.

“Every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary of Europe has to host a family, starting from my diocese of Rome,” Francis said.

There is no way America can turn our heads away or pretend that we do not have the resources to make a real significant difference for a portion of those now homeless and hurting.  We need to open our arms and embrace some into our communities.

As many this morning head to worship in all sorts of churches I hope there is a call for humanity that echoes the words of Pope Francis.  Our government needs to act and do so within days.

Lol, the Pope is inviting two families to live at the Vatican–hardly an impressive gesture. Do as I say, not as I do.
