GOP Establishment Ponder Brokered Convention To Up-End Potential Nutty Nominee
What do conservatives think tonight after news broke today that more than 20 top GOP officials (Priebus, McConnell, Cheney) discussed at a three-course dinner Monday the party’s strategy in the event of a brokered convention amid Donald Trump’s consistent lead in the polls?
The establishment should not allow the ones from the far right to drive the party into the ditch. But by so taking the logical step do they then force a nasty episode in the party which results in the ones who never get their type of nominee to not give their all for the general election?
A brokered convention would be awesome political theatre–a divided GOP priceless.
The development represents a major shift for veteran Republican strategists, who until this month had spoken of a brokered convention only in the most hypothetical terms — and had tried to encourage a drama-free nomination by limiting debates and setting an earlier convention date.
Now, those same leaders see a floor fight as a real possibility. And so does Trump, who said in an interview last week that he, too, is preparing.
