This Would Bring Government To A Standstill With Rage Glowing Red Hot

June 13, 2017

Last evening on Newshour an interview with Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, who is a friend with Donald Trump, said the president has discussed firing special counsel Robert Mueller. To even say those words or bring the topic up as a plausible scenario is simply numbing.  Democracy has rudders that can not and must not be ripped up and tossed aside.  The special counsel, in the case at hand, is one such rudder that must be left untouched.

Ruddy said. “I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel. I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.”

Firing Mueller would be a political bomb going off in Washington. A political explosion of this kind has not been set off since the Saturday Night Massacre when President Nixon created a constitutional crisis. The fact that Mueller, the former FBI director, is widely respected on both sides of the aisle, means there would be rage of the likes this country has not seen for decades.  If Trump made such a move there would be a time of shock in D.C. that would paralyze government.

Technically speaking Trump himself does not have the authority to directly fire the special counsel. That would have to be done by the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, given that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from DOJ’s Russia investigation.  The names that were asked to fire Archibald Cox in the Nixon days still send shivers through government types and such a scenario now would convulse democracy now more than it did in the 70’s given who (or what) is now in the White House.

The very words that Ruddy conveyed are most troubling.  If there was any sense of leadership in the White House or a concern for the nation Trump would make a clear and unambiguous statement that affirms his belief that this special counsel is a position that is needed and will remain in place.
