Transgenders Removed From U.S. Military Service Via Twitter

July 26, 2017

The U.S. military will no longer allow transgender individuals to serve “in any capacity.”  Those who the unfortunate words from President Trump today via Twitter.   I am taken aback that a major decision of this type was relayed in a tweet that no doubt came from Trump sitting on a toilet.

“After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.”  He added that the nation cannot be burdened with the medical costs that transgenders in the military would entail.  That, of course, is a most dubious statement.

This is a policy shift and reversal of an Obama-era decision which was established last June by former Defense Secretary Ash Carter that transgender troops could serve openly.

Let me put it simply. If you’re not outraged by the ban on transgender people serving in the military, your biases and prejudices are laid bare. Period.

But you also should be dismayed in the manner this decision was announced.  While this was not the first time Trump has made a discriminatory policy decision about transgender people–the first was in February when he announced that he had repealed an Obama rule allowing transgender students to use whatever bathroom they want–the use of Twitter to announce a most troubling and bigoted plan is stunning.

I guess all those great generals were all too busy to put out a decent statement from the Defense Department.
