Trivia: Those Darn Union Rules!

January 13, 2018

In this week of madness unleashed by the Trump Administration comes a smile via a book, Nixonland.  This afternoon while reading of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago comes this quote.

As the anti-Vietnam war delegates sing and demonstrate in the convention hall the floor managers keep the orchestra playing to tamp down the attempts to derail the proceedings.  NBC anchors Chet Huntley and David Brinkley are talking with John Chancellor who is on the floor among the delegates when this line is offered.

“John, they may not realize that the orchestra may run into a union problem!  I’d think an orchestra has to be given five minutes’ rest every hour or sometime like that.”

The comment was made in the late afternoon of Wednesday, August 28, 1968.   The day that rocked the political world and that presidential campaign season.
