American Farmers Getting What They Deserve

April 8, 2018

Lets put the facts right out on the line.

Over the past couple of weeks we have witnessed Donald Trump doing precisely what he threatened to do as a candidate.   He vowed he would get tough on China and do so with placing high tariffs on the items sent to this nation from an incredibly fast developing nation.

But as he does so he faces outrage from farmers who voted overwhelmingly for the most flawed candidate ever nominated by a major political party.  Farmers knew what he said as a candidate, they knew the hate he espoused, the vile nature of his character, the mighty shortcoming of his intellect.

And yet farmers cast a ballot for Trump.

The fact that many of these voters could suffer devastating losses in a trade war should not concern any of us.  For too long farmers have cast votes–again and again–which are simply not able to be defended in the light of day.  Too often farmers show their greed and lack of awareness hoping that after the damage is done they can run for cover or seek assistance in some other way.

No.  Not this time.  Not after the vote for Donald Trump.

Farmers need to soak up the losses and stay quiet.   No one wants to hear farmers prattle on about the effects of Trump on their bottom line when they were told in countless ways during the election that their intentions were seriously flawed.

When I worked for a state representative from Door and Kewaunee Counties it struck me over and over how short-sighted the farming community could be. They would be railing against teachers on the one hand and then one on the other talk about the advances made in seed productivity and how if benefited their bottom line. Never did they put the pieces together. They swallowed the GOP line over and over.

I have an old acquaintance who has been a farmer all his life. Prior to the 2016 election, we would spar, via Facebook, about the Presidential candidates (he being of the “Lock Her Up” ilk). I kept responding that “Tommy (the guy’s name) knows deep down in his heart that Democrats have always been better for the worker, and especially the farmer”. And yet, somehow I just can’t bring myself to throw this one in his face (although he’s certainly earned it).

” Farmers get what they deserve”……. finally, it was said.
