Pablo Villavicencio Should Not Be Ripped From Wife, Children

June 8, 2018

By now most of us are aware of the story about Pablo Villavicencio.  A large swath of the country thinks this is very wrong and even immoral.  It is, as the Daily News headlines, a Disgrace To Our Country.

What was supposed to be a pizzeria worker’s uneventful delivery run to Fort Hamilton last week ended in his sudden detention at the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Pablo Villavicencio, a 32-year-old employee of a Brooklyn restaurant, was born in Ecuador. He has a green-card application in process, and had in the past delivered to the Army-controlled base. This past Friday, however, he arrived at the gates, and a guard asked Villavicencio for ID to prove that he was a citizen. When Villavicencio apparently could not produce any, the guard made a call and “handed him over to immigration authorities.”

Villavicencio is now thought to be locked in a New Jersey facility, but his exact location is unclear. Sandra Chica, his wife, is trying to prevent his deportation, and has reached out to TV stations and Spanish-language newspapers. Personnel at neither Fort Hamilton nor ICE have commented on the events, but activists say the circumstances of Villavicencio’s detention are unprecedented in New York City and State. Javier Valdés, co-executive director of Make the Road, an immigrant family advocacy group, has called for an investigation of the incident, which seems to represent a “collaboration” between the military and ICE. It has also been alleged that the guard did not have legal authority to question Villavicencio about his citizenship status.

Whether the immigration system is broken or not broken has nothing to do with a citizen of another country who chooses to come into the USA illegally and live here for 10 years illegally. I didn’t have a gut reaction to the story, I carefully read and thought about how to respond. And no where did I say he should be deported. IF he has filed (although very late in the day) his paper work should be examined to see if he can be approved to stay.

You go on to say “this man and his family are yet one more example of law-abiding immigrants….”. No, he is not law-abiding. His first act of coming into the USA was breaking the law. He created the family that is now suffering. I don’t feel unkindly towards the woman and her children. I recognized the bind she is in. However, there comes a time when all people have to realize the actions they take have consequences, both good and bad.

As far as angry white people, or angry black people, or angry yellow people, or angry brown people, or angry red people, or angry mixed people…whether they be energetic or lazy, satisfied or complainers, working or not working…IF they’re citizens they have the right to live in this country.

Well that is a harsh view of this story. This case underscores the human toll of a broken immigration system. For years, Congress has failed to fix it–and Republicans in the House are the cause. Meanwhile families like the deliveryman’s which you have shown no kindness for wind up suffering. Deporting a working father should not be the priority of ICE–and it should not be your gut reaction when hearing this news. This man and his family are yet one more shining example of law-abiding immigrants who have established roots in the community and yet from the Trump crowd are not worthy of leniency. SHAME! If all the angry white people in this land had just half as much get-up-and-do energy like this man, and not just sit and complain, they too would have a job and and income.

He’s been here illegally 10 years. When they married 5 yrs ago, why didn’t he apply then instead of waiting until Feb? As for her, sure she’s in a bind, but she married him knowing he was illegal. She had 2 kids with him knowing he was illegal. Now, she says she can’t take care of her own children without him. They both created their own situation.
