Does Senator Susan Collins Actually Believe What She Says?

Senator Susan Collins was interviewed a number of times this past weekend.  Her comments make me wonder how a sitting senator, who has a number of years of experience, can be so disconnected from reality?

Collins was interviewed on ABC By Martha Raddatz.

“You talked about precedent, you support abortion rights. What will you do to ensure that remains in place with the nominee?”

Collins said, “I’m going to have an in depth discussion with the nominee and I believe very much that Roe v. Wade is settled law, as it has been described by Chief Justice Roberts. It has been established as a constitutional right for 46 year — 45 years, and was reaffirmed 26 years ago.

So a nominee position, whether or not they respect precedent, will tell me a lot about whether or not they would overturn Roe v. Wade. A candidate of this import position who would overturn Roe v. Wade would not be acceptable to me, because that would indicate an activist agenda that I don’t want to see a judge have. And that would indicate to me a failure to respect precedent of fundamental tenet of our judicial system.

On CNN Jake Tapper asked, “For instance, don’t you think, just as an academic matter, Neil Gorsuch, for whom you voted, don’t you think he is probably going to vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade if given the chance?”

Collins said, “I actually don’t. I had a very long discussion with Justice Gorsuch in my office, and he pointed out to me that he is a co-author of a whole book on precedent. So, someone who devotes that much time to writing a book on precedent, I think, understands how important a principle that is in our judicial system.”

  1. Don't snooker me Solly

Collins has a habit of getting snookered and never learns her lesson. I remember about 15 years ago, when she “had a deal” to end the practice of corporate headquarters relocating to a p.o. box in a foreign country to avoid U.S. taxes (you know the same companies the Repugnants just gave a sweetheart deal in the tax bill to come back). These same companies would apply for gubment contracts. Collin’s bill would say they couldn’t bid on them. She came out of a meeting saying they had a deal to take it up the next session. Tom Delay came out of the same meeting and said, I never made that deal. And Collin’s bill was never heard from again. How someone could be in office that long and have no sense of someone lying to their face is unbelievable. She may as well be a Democrat.
