Where We Are Tonight With Trump’s Government Shutdown

January 9, 2019

While Donald Trump acted like a spoiled child in front of congressional leaders today, what really requires our attention are actions in the Republican caucus of each chamber.

There are at least five GOP senators from Alaska to Maine, including Nebraska and Colorado, where a growing disenchantment with Trump concerning the government shutdown is growing.

Susan Collins told NBC News that Trump’s threat to declare a national emergency to get funding for the border wall is “a very dubious move from the constitutional perspective. Without congressional authorization is not what I think is intended by the national emergency act.”

The courts will settle the matter should Trump act without consideration to the process of governing.

When asked about the end game of Trump’s shutdown she stated, “I’m worried about what the end game is. This cannot be allowed to go on forever.”

What we have witnessed over the past 19 days is a failed approach to governing by Trump, and many Republicans, who told the nation they knew how to run the ship of state.  They most clearly do not.  If the wall was so important why did Trump not force the matter when he had both chambers of congress held by the GOP?

Trump’s dismal and immature approach has underscored how removed he is from strategic planning and preparation for governing.  Instead, he is only interested in transactional day-to-day maneuvering.  He has no real guidance system in his gut which can be relied on to lead the nation.  What he calls gut-instinct the rest of us know to be pure fat.  He is a day-trader in government, and like his businesses, is more a huckster than a success.   That is why we are in this mess tonight.

Meanwhile eight House Republicans broke with Trump on his shutdown strategy and backed the Democrats’ plan to reopen the Treasury Department without adding money to fund the president’s proposed border wall.  We can expect to see more of this type of reaction from the GOP as Democrats apply more pressure for sanity to return to government.

And so it goes.
